head gasket

Unless the gasket or packaging says not to, I use Copper Coat spray. Some gaskets are pre-coated with sealer, so none needed on those. I use a medium coating on both sides of the gasket as though I was going to paint for looks. Nice and even. Follow the directions on the spray can. Jim

i have never used copper coat yet on a head gasket in all my years of engine work. i use permatex high tack spray on every engine gasket. most composite gaskets have the sealant built right into the material. when the engine is heated up this is the sealing. the cheap felpro gaskets nowadays need all the help they can get. i would sooner reuse the original old 2 sided metal gasket than these garbage gaskets. many head gaskets have been reused in the 1920's and 30's with just grease on them as the sealant. i have done the same also. plus now you need to pay down right stupid money for head gaskets that you could have bought the tractor for years ago.

Copper coat or aluminum paint. When I built my BA which is half B half A I reused the head gasket and use 6 coats of aluminum pait and that was probably 10 plus years ago

BAck in the early 70's a friend had a Ford Pinto. They just came out with aluminum heads. Under warranty ford put 2 head gaskets on it.
It took a 6 pack of Bud for the two of us to remove the head and put a new gasket on it. Back then I never heard of silicon gasket. It was clear silicone. HE put a very thin coat of silicone on both sides of the head gasket. We both drank a beer while silicone dried a little. One beer each to remove head, one for silicone to dry and one to replace head. Not bad for two college boys.
He never had a problem with head gasket. Ford original gasket leaked and 2 other attempts to replace it failed too..
I have used copper spray. I wish I had used silicone. Had a tiny pitted area on Farmall block and the spray copper didn't fill in the tiny pit. Leaks a few drops of oil.

I am not familiar with the type of head gasket material that you have. If both surfaces are good; composite - no Steel or multi layered steel - yes.

Usually the gasket set manufacturer has strong views on this so I go with what they put up on their web site.
