Chasing a nasty pop noise on a 09 ford flex. Thought i had it narrowed to inner tie rod but now that its exposed i can rock the linear rack shaft more than a 32nd in the tube. Doesn't seem right but havent been this deep in a rack before. Appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks in advance. Fred

Usually a failing rack first symptom will be leaking seals.
If you can consistently make it pop when turning, have an assistant turn the wheel while watching what is happening. It might be the rack, but it might be another component, something loose, something cracked and flexing.

A common occurrence when the strut upper bearing goes bad is a pop noise while turning. Reach in above the front tire and lay your hand on the spring and have someone turn the steering wheel side to side and see if you can feel it in the spring when it pops.
