Using corn cobs for heat ????

I was offered a wagon load of dry corn cobs for free. I was thinking about running them through my wood burner. Will I get any heat out of them? Will they burn up real fast causing me to feed the burner non stop. Am I wasting my time? Anybody ever tried burning cobs? Thanks Gerald

I burn a few bushel every year. They burn hot and quickly. I use them for starting and on those cold windy days when a burst of heat feels real good.

I will concur with your previous two replies. I used to have a dual fuel furnace, and when I had corn cobs, would burn them to take the chill off when it was too warm out to start a wood fire. Thereby saving some fuel oil.

Dad used to tell about a local mill operator who cut hair evenings, and burned only corn cobs in the stove in his barber shop. Both buildings still stand, unused.

Great fire starters. Burn pretty fast and a lot of ash if you try to use only cobs for a time you will be feeding them in very often.

But sure nice as a fire starter.

Storing them without rodents worked good the more cats we had on the place, was kind of a problem when we had few cats......

My Dad grew up in the Depression. He said they sometimes burned corn cobs, Lots of heat but for long term use, they would burn the grates out of the stove.

I sometimes use cobs in this heater in the shop.
They bore a bit and then make a glowing bed of coals that last a long time.

We burned them in the kitchen range when I was a kid. We kept a bushel basket full of cobs beside the range to feed it. Cobs worked well in the cattle tank heater because of the easy starting and quick heat.

gramdma could make the most beautiful angel food cake in her cob burning kitchen
range, Also had the cob box beside it which was my responsibility to keep full. Easy
job, no cob, no cake. LOL
