Jd 6400 tachometer

Had a reman jd 4045T engine go out in my 6400.
Bought a 4045T out of a street sweeper with 600hrs on it and put it in tractor.

When we installed the tach sensor in new motor it says at idle it is running 1200rpms and if you go full throttle it goes as far as the tach will go.
Obviously this is not right! Also for both motor serial numbers according to jd they take the same part number (sensor) for tach.

Any ideas?

The sensor "counts" gear teeth on the injection pump drive gear as they pass by it (IIRC).

I wonder if DEERE could have changed the "pitch" of the timing gears over time?

If NOT, possibly a ground for the engine control harness is hanging disconnected or has been damaged or shielding around the wires has been damaged.

Ditto what woreout stated, check for loose ground wire. According to part # search RE519144 tach sensor has 852 different engine applications

Do you still have the old engine? If so look behind the tach sensor, see what triggers it, how many triggers pass by the sensor in one revolution of the engine.

Possibly the new engine has more triggers, or the old engine measured cam or pump speed, and the new engine is measuring crank speed.

If that is the case, what to do about it is another question.

Have you looked at the back of the tach? Possibly there is a jumper or a way to set the count ratio.

Another possibility is post ID #s from both engines so the timing gears can be cross-referenced.

SE4045T590106
PE4045T058695

Also the ground is less than 6 away no breaks and rechecked it. Im thinking it isnt a ground problem.

It's odd but both SE & PE prefixes come up with no info.

4045 has 1104 possibilities.

I copied/pasted each serial # in JDparts.com machine search box & both #s revealed same parts catalog #. Drive gear for inj pump is same part #.
