Oldest son has corn ready

He had his helper get the combine and header out and start cleaning and greasing it yesterday.
Corn is ready to pick and he has it booked at a very good price.
Some of the best upcountry corn I have ever seen.
Planted in March.

I hope to start within a week.

We're a while away from picking, but the silage corn is ready. I just need to get the hay finished up first. I've got some to bale today and tomorrow, 24 acres to cut yet. I hoped to cut it Saturday and bale it Monday, but now the weather doesn't look too good until Wednesday next week, so silage just got bumped back another week.

I just need to stay home. LOL

We were away from home 12 days total in August for shows and festivals. Is this what retirement is like? If it is, I'd better not do it, it'd run me ragged.

I got some up hay in August, but it was so hot and humid, showers were popping up every few days, so putting up hay was a gamble. This week has been perfect though so far. I rolled up 102 bales yesterday, 96 last week before we headed for Indiana for a tomato festival Friday and Saturday. It won't take me more than 8 or 9 days to fill silo alone once I get at it. I just changed some tines on the rake and came in top fill my tea jug. The dew should be off before long so I can start raking.

If you dont mind my asking what price are you guys expecting to get this year?I dont know much about corn like why are the prices higher this year?I know deer corn is 9-13 bucks per 50 pound sack in the stores

rrlund,

Sounds like you and your wife are having too much fun!

Envious... Do you or she need somebody to travel along and carry luggage, open doors, gas up the car, etc?.... Can cook if needed - not a bad driver - and will work for cheap. GRIN!!

She's offered to take somebody else along instead of me, but that wouldn't be much fun for me now would it? LOL

She finds one thing to do, I find more while we're there. She wants to go to a seed swap next month. There's a 150 mile yard sale that same weekend through the same town. We've rented a cabin on a lake for four nights and invited our grand daughter and her boyfriend down on Sunday to hang out at the lake before we head home on Monday. I don't think retirement could beat finding reasons to get away from work.

I have noticed several corn fields that are turning brown in the last week. I am guessing two weeks and someone will start shelling here. Somebody will shell at 90% moisture just for bragging rights at the coffee shop!

Richard just out of curiosity what maturity is your sons corn? Here in my part of northwest Iowa we plant 100 to 113 day corn. We try to plant in mid to late April if mother nature goes along with our intentions.

I haven't ventured oit to look other than along State Route 49 North and South of Edon Ohio. The corn is only brown up about 18 inches from the ground here. They said on the radio that an early harvest has been forecast for our area. Other than the areas that flooded both the corn and beans look very good.

neighbors beans are dropping laves like crazy his corn is changing colors too I thing he had his beans about April 15 corn little after that he was done planting by May 1.
a couple years ago he did the same thing some neighbors thought he was crazy that fall he was done with harvest before some had started. We had wet fall he was done before rain started.
