Hey everyone I got an 88 Oliver pulling tractor with a 320 walkasha motor in it I have had head work and valves done and exhaust and manifold port and polished as big as i can and my cam done my tractor will rev until it wants to blow in neutral and in gear 5th I go up the road with it and it cuts and spits and skips about half throttle I put hot coil resistor and electronic ignition on it and a distributor and I still cant get the miss out of the motor now with all that its doing it in neutral and down the rd what can I do to fix it? Thanks James Langs

Likely fuel mixture problems.

May need a bigger venturi if you're running higher RPM than it was originally governed for.

Might even need a larger carb all together.

Honestly dont know I have a zenith big carb on it with a 3/8 inch fuel line and a 5 to 7 lb fuel pump its like Im not getting enough spark Im not sure whats going on

I suspect you have a fuel supply issue, either from the tank through the pump into the carb or your fuel mixture is out of whack. It would be nice if you could get a O2 sensor and check A/F ratio, you might find the mixture is going lean. If it is a spark issue the O2 sensor would show the mixture is getting rich.
Example

A big carb and lots of fuel delivered to the carb still doesn't provide information about mixture ratios where it is breaking up. Using a Hydrocarbon probe should provide the answer. Emissions check stations (if in your state, or were) can do that check. High Idle engine speed may be 10% open on the throttle plate, and not depending on the power circuit/s. Jim

Yes i am getting black smoke from it when it starts to sputter and pop with full throttle like its pushing fuel right through and not burning it

Black smoke is too rich.

What do the plugs look like? Sooty black is too rich.

Weak or intermittent ignition causes white smoke, unburned gas vapor, eye burning raw gas smell, flames, exhaust backfire.

As others said, need some diagnostic equipment and a way to load the engine, a dyno. You're not putting any load on it just driving.

Tell us what exactly a ..hot coil resistor and electronic ignition on it and a distributor.. is, as in manufacturer and numbers. Tell us how is it hooked up? Most electronic ignitions are specified to be fed full 12 volts but a coil may still need a resistor. So the electronic ignition module will need to be on the side of the resistor fed by the switch. Timing may also be playing a part in your lack of stellar performance.

Another issue to check easily is if the distributor cam shaft bushings are worn. I know that moderately worn bushings can be masked by the reluctor, but they can be bad enough to cause erratic spark, and fluctuating timing. Jim

Several good replies on here. One that Ive not seen mentioned is the gas. We had one recently that was acting up, changed out for fresh gas, fixed the issue. I will ditto the mention of the electronic ignition. Weve recently replaced the third pertronix unit in one of our tractors. Needless to say, it wont be replaced again as there are now a set of points back in the distributor.

That is a good point about the gas. It may now be setup to run on high octane gas. I would check the compression, or try some aviation gas. A call to the previous owner could provide many more answers than we can here.

If its ohv may need valve adjustments.

Been there. You have more than enough volume for fuel flow sans a fuel pump unless your tank is below the level of your carb. I tried adding a fuel pump for no real reason to my 330 CI 77 and overwhelmed the float/needle/seat in the larger Zenith I had adapted to use. I detoured around the fuel pump and it ran fine. They DO make lower pressure pumps if you insist on having one more potential problem. gm
