Diagnosing a possible PTO issue

I've got a Massey Ferguson 150 that I typically use to do mowing with, both with a 5.5 ft flail and a 4 ft brush mower. Both of which run fine on my Ferguson TO30, but when I put them on my MF-150 I start to have issues with.

If I've got the tractor stationary in neutral, and I engage the PTO, the mowers both seem to run just fine, no issues. However, when I'm driving along in gear, the PTO seems to not want to spin up to speed at all. I'm not the most mechanically inclined, but my gut tells me this is some sort of clutch issue on my Massey 150, but I'm not positive. Since I've got multiple tractors, I can eliminate the problem being with the mowers, which then points back to the tractor being the issue.

Does my explanation make any sense, am I headed in the right direction to figure this one out, or am I missing something totally obvious. What say you?

Thanks for you time and thoughts.

I don't know much about them. But I would say the problem is with the
tractor. Mowers are very simple to me. Not much to go wrong. I am
sure someone will be along with a better answer.

Many Masseys have 2 positions you can engage the pto into. One is engine speed and the other is ground speed. Make sure you have it in engine
speed position.

Yep, Tracy.
Helped a friend with that problem recently.
He had it in the neutral position.
He had no clue about different PTO speeds on his Massey.
Talked to a friend of yours a while ago in Sylacauga.

If you have the PTO in ground speed position, it will stop when the tractor stops rolling, and will follow along with the ground speed. It would never get enough speed to mow.

Sounds more like the 2 stage clutch is worn out, out of adjustment, or the hub is broken. It's rare to wear one out.

When working properly the PTO clutch will disengage when the clutch pedal is all the way down. The PTO clutch will engage first as you let the pedal up, then the tractor drive clutch will begin to apply as you get nearer the top.

I believe there is an adjustment that can be made from underneath, through the inspection cover. If it's like the ones I am familiar with, there should be about .090 inch between the bolt heads and the secondary plate as viewed through the inspection cover. But yours could be different, might ask on the MF board.

The MF 150 USSUALLY had the two stage flywheel clutch assembly, which MAY be slipping due to an oil leak on the PTO disc. MF also had a HYDRAULIC independent PTO option
available that some tractors have, if so MAKE SURE the long travel control lever goes into the detent when pulled back into the on position, it WILL slip if not in
detent. The way to tell which PTO system you have, the two stage has the ground drive lever position, there is no ground drive on hydraulic clutch models.

It's the 2 stage clutch for sure.

I should have included, this tractor used to run both mowers just fine, now it doesn't. Which is why I tend to believe its some sort of wear issue. I guess the place to start is pulling that inspection cover to take a look and see whats going on.

I bought this tractor a few years back with unknown hours (well, hour meter stuck at 5000, I should say). So who knows what the hours really are and how long that clutch has been on there. I did adjust the freeplay on the clutch in the last year, I wonder if I messed something up then.
