231 MF alternator

I usually always replace my tractor alternators with a one wire Chevy alternator but my Massey Ferguson 231 only has a little over 240 hours on it and I want to keep it original so that it will keep up with the hours on it. I noticed that replacement alternators do not come with the back cover on it so Im assuming its just an easy swap from the defective alternator to the new replacement?

The word fits is the key ingredient. Fitting usually requires a tailor to adjust seams and cuff length. It may just be the exact one, or a work alike. the guess is as good as anyone's. I would fit the tinwork even if it needed a tweak. Jim

Their alternator looks identical to the one on eBay at twice the price and it doesnt show the rear of the alternator either, Ive contacted company on eBay to see if the rear half of my old alternator has to bolt up to the front half. Waiting on their reply.

Is there an alternator shop near you that could rebuild it? it ought to be cheaper and you'll be able to keep the original alternator with the tractor.

First, try to take it apart. Some are easy and others might need a special tool to remove three screws that are in a tight spot. You might only have one bad bearing and it might only cost $8. I have replaced bearings in a few.
