tire chains

how effective is putting tire chains on just the front wheels on a 4X4 tractor. The tractor is hst drive and front wheels are smaller than the rear wheels. Just thinking ahead for this winter as I have always had to put chains on my rear wheels in the past for my driveway which is mostly 7 to 9 percent grade (paved). It would be much easier to just put chains on the smaller front wheels. Because there are no brakes on the front wheels how effective would that be for down hill movement or does the hst drive help. Thanks, Leon

Three factors from my view point.
The assist part of the Front drive then becomes loaded with much more responsibility for moving.
The chains can act as a slip stick slip stick shock loading to the complex (expansive) drive train.
Chaining both is Ok with my thinking. as sliding down hill is real scary. Jim

I have been plowing my dirt driveway with my 30 HP Kubota with glide shift for twenty years. I have a very steep portion. I plow it down hill and have never had a front drive traction problem.

Thanks for the replies guys, I am going to stick with just the rears chained up. Just like to do it before it actually gets cold and there is snow to move.

That's probably the safe choice here. Nobody really knows what will happen with chains on the front.

I've seen the front ends on these little tractors take some pretty serious abuse, picking loads so heavy that the rear tires are barely scratching the ground and the front end is doing all the pulling. Those are only brief and temporary, though, not a continuous thing.
