Plugging an open leg in a Y tailpipe

The OEM muffler on my tractor hauler was two in two out. Stainless but it rusted out after 20 years. The tailpipe after the muffler is a two into one.

Chevy 3500 with 8.1l gas engine. They dont make a factory replacement. Nearest I could find was two in one out.

Other than the open inlet into the tailpipe the new muffler fit perfectly. So now I'm looking for some sort of cap to fit over the open tailpipe inlet so it isn't dumping exhaust up under the bed of the truck.

I am a bit confused. You state the OEM was 2 in 2 out. The new found muffler is 2 in one out. The output now needs to be single
pipe to two. What am I missing. Jim

So you wanted one like this:

Weld a cap over the open
hole.Or.....convert to dual
exaust.Straight pipes,glass pacs,or
something else.

The tailpipe is two in one out. After connecting to the new muffler there is an open inlet on the tailpipe.

Not a huge deal but I want to cover it up. Can't weld stainless dont have a tig and I'd have to pull the muffler back out to be able to weld on it anyway.

Just need some kind of cap to clamp over the open hole and looking for ideas.

Mig weld it. The wire does not know. You could stick weld it too if you have some tiny electrodes.

Maybe a metal plug used to fill a knockout out in a breaker box??

Big butt C-Clamp and collapse the un used end and then weld it shut.

just thinking, what about a welsh plug/ freeze plug? not sure if you could match up the id, but worth a shot.

How about obtaining a little piece of pipe which will fit your problem end, and collapsing one end of it before installation, then
clamping it in place?

Take it to a muffler shop. Have them install a pair of glass packs, and bend up a pair of new tail pipes.

Incidently, my 2001 K3500 has the same exhaust system as yours.

They don't make a factory replacement.

Not sure if you mean aftermarket or OEM.
In the past I have seen OEM exhaust parts
that were much better made then
aftermarket for only a few dollars more.
So if you didn't try a dealer for OEM it
may be worth it. If you did ignore this:)

Not that it helps in your case, but I have welded stainless with a mig before, several times. Worked well.
Mark.

Neither. There is literally NOTHING out there OEM or aftermarket allowing the use of the stock pipes. There is ONE aftermarket "cat back" system but it isn't even stainless and makes it sound like an old grain truck, which it already did with the blown out old muffler.

I had to get a muffler for a 6.0L.

The 2nd outlet on the big block GM mufflers is not really an exhaust outlet, but rather it is there for harmonics to reduce noise. Sounds weird, but trust me it is true. I have a 2500 with an 8.1 and put a Walker muffler and tailpipe on it recently. Yes, the new muffler is 2 in 1 out. O'Reilly has them listed. Not sure why your store can't seem to find the parts. They have not disappeared from the Earth.

Have a 1/2 thick circle cut from plate with a plasma torch that is the same as the ID of the pipe. Stick it in the hole and put a
clamp on it Jim.
