Hitting a Deer

For driving on dark roads out in the country.
Saw this at the truck stop last night.
Almost thought I made a wrong turn and was in Australia.
Even works on that occasional car that will not get out of your way.

They have been installing guards on some of our company road trucks.
At about $1000 plus labor to install it is cheap insurance when you consider the cost of a front cap.
We had a driver hit a horse about a week ago.
It was not pretty for the horse or the truck.

I even like the cameras they have in all our trucks now.
No question as to what happened now when you hit something.

Does that work for Swift drivers parking next to you? Beware if that guard IS ON A SWIFT truck.

My son ( and girlfriend) hit a bull on a dark road near Bastrop Tx on his way back to San Marcos about 20 years ago. Totaled the truck. They only got small cuts and scraps and bruises. Of coarse in this case the local deputy could not find the bulls owner even though they easily found where the bull had crossed a broken fence leaving a field of many cows. The only animals in the area for miles. He said it really was like hitting a brick wall. Im just glad they were in a truck that had some height to the front end. Wingnut

Looks like a good deal if it is private truck - might raise it a foot to let all the blow-out tires go under it! :) Thanks

Son hit a deer two years ago in his Dodge pickup. Nearly $7,000.00 in damage, and he had to cough up the first $1,000.00 . I hit a deer in May of 2015 with my 2002 Chev pickup. Both air bags went off, so the insurance company wrote the truck off. I think a bumper like that on a big truck is worth having, that could be a bit extreme, but looks like it would strain out all the big pieces

Thanks for the pic,

Never seen anything like that.

I bet it would work on many things, not just deer.

I used to watch a show where they would tow disabled and stuck trucks. They really whined and complained when an aftermarket grill guard prevented them from hooking their cable to the designated tow hooks.

(quoted from post at 18:03:11 08/19/21) tx law protects the animal owners...be blessed, grateful, prepared...

Yup, eastern Oregon too. Open range laws say you owe the animal's owner for damages.

In Texas on farm to market roads and county roads yes the motorist is liable for the livestock. On state highways or interstate highways the owner of the livestock is liable for damages to the motorist. iTony

Yes but is the camera watching you at the same time?we have those.they are activated by any hard braking, collisions, etc.but they record anything we might be doing wrong too cause the camera looks ahead and pointed at the driver.quite a few of our employees were fired for talking on a cell phone,no seat belt etc.

I designed a grill guard and have a local little fab shop make them for me for about $700 each. Probably get a bit less MPG but after we hit 11 deer in a 12 month stretch years ago, I felt it was worth it. Bill

Deer can be your friend. Hit one on the way to fireworks a few weeks ago. 2004 Buick had driven it for work, 260,000 miles, engine and trans were good but rear end was falling out. I had planned on selling it, hoped to get $500-$1000. Insurance bought it from me for almost $3000. Thank You Bambi.

Really need a vehicle like the Storm Chaser show where it's armored all the way around. I have the side of my van dented from a deer T-Boning me on the highway.

John, on our recent road trip I noticed a lot of trucks had this cow catcher made out of round tubing. They seemed pretty uniform in construction so maybe some company builds these for after market. Well I got to tell you I'm not impressed. Got to see one in use; early morning upstate New York, semi greases a big buck. I mean greases! Going 65-70MPH parts and pieces fly everywhere, deer parts truck parts. Two things surprised me; one was how fast he got that truck over to the side of the road and stopped, and how much damaged it did. I only got a glimpse as we went by, but it appeared that that after market guard didn't mitigate ANY damage. About the only thing that wasn't damaged was the passenger side head light. Hood, grille, plastic bumper cover hanging down, pieces strewn across the highway. I guess what I'm getting at is, I don't know how much those things cost but in my humble opinion they're not worth it.

Anyway, keep on truckin.
JD

Weight added? I hope that is thin wall aluminum. That seems like overkill for a 100 to 200 pound deer. Hitting a 1000 to 2000 pound animal at speed would just cave that back into the hood and radiator
