It must taste good

At least the mice think so. Today I climbed up in the combine cab to start getting it ready for this year's harvest. I saw evidence of mice as soon as I opened the door - some black rice on the seat and a little shredded paper on the floor. GRRR! I had done the usual mouse repellent and poison bait as in the past, but still had an intruder. I went to start it up and then is when I saw this.

The darn mouse had eaten off the tops of all the toggle switches on the console. Nothing else was touched, just the buttons. The throttle buttons, the cylinder speed, the fan speed, the concave and sieve adjustments, all of them. I'll have to get the book out to figure out what button does what and label them somehow. GRRR again!

Check ALL your fluids before starting the combine.Neighbor fired his up one year and let it run outside the shed for a while just to warm it up--till it quit running. Mice chewed the lower radiator hose draining all the the coolant. The only thing he looked at was the plastic overflow tank which was still full.
Dirt floor in shed soaked up all the antifreeze. Total rebuild on the engine.

Strange the things they will go after!

Several years ago one of the car manufacturers changed the formula in their wire insulation to make the car more recyclable.

Mice loved it!

TEE, I kept a couple tractors, a planter, my combine, and some smaller machinery to farm the 300 acres I own. I sold the big equipment and the livestock equipment when I let go the 1500 acres I had rented. Gotta do some work to keep me out of trouble. :)

I think they are also after the salt from human hands on the buttons and hoses. I have noticed this on propane hoses adjacent to the connectors where hands would grip. And yes I think they are attracted to oils used as plasticizers in polymers.

I had some rodents eat about 1/3 of the wheel on a manual fertilizer spreader. They ate it like a piece of pizza taking several wedges out. I also had some eat part of a radiator hose on a Nova.

Years ago I went to get the N-7 out to service it to start cutting for the year. I checked all the oil and coolant then tried to start it. It wouldnt even click the solenoid. When I went to hook up jumper cables I saw they had eaten holes in the bottom of all three batteries. Only one year never did it again. By the way the old 7 was shelling corn today. Probably its last season here as the boys are looking at a 1688 Case IH to replace it. Tony

Good for you--That is my theory also--stay busy or whither up and die!!--9000 series Deere?--Good Luck---Tee

Any chance the buttons they chewed off were the same ones you may have touched while you had something like grease from fried chicken on your hands?

One would think there must be something that caused them to be so selective on which ones to munch on.
