Rotten to the core.

You couldn't tell anything was wrong with tree until a huge branch broke off at the fork.

BTW, YESTERDAY power company was cutting down trees smaller than this on in people's front yard. Only crime, trees were too close to High voltage power lines.

I wounder how many unhappy people are having the wrong tree removed form front yard?
I may take pic next time I drive by.
I think the power company has right of way and can clear cut trees planted in right of way making owners unhappy.

On west side of property, power company comes by ever few years, clear cuts and mowes everything. WE don't mind. Actually happy they do. It's in a flood plane and we don't care.

I guess the power companies differ from state to state. Around here, they usually trim up the tree around the wires. When the tree is directly under the lines, they tunnel out the middle. Looks neat when there are several in a row.

My corn is turning fast. Plant April 7, been thru a hard freeze, 2 inch snow and several frosts.

My guess is some will be shelling in 3 weeks.

Looks like the tree you posted a picture of had been damaged in some way and had a hollow. Then broken off by a storm.

Near where I live someone had planted pine trees in their front yard too close to the power lines. The trees are about 30' higher than the lines now and the utility company cuts all the limbs off right up to the trunk on that side. The trees look terrible like that. I believe I would have removed the trees before they got that big.

I posted a pic of the branch that broke off a few days ago after a small thunder storm.
Before that, the tree looked normal.

How can one tell if the tree next to their house is hollow?

Trees are accidents waiting to happen.

I tried to download the picture to enlarge it but it wasn't formatted where I could do it. It just looks like the black area in the center of the stump that is left is the hollow. The rest of it that is broken is white. I have had some on my place that were more than 24 in diameter but they would have about a 18 hollow void in the middle.

Our power company does it that way too. But if the trunk at waist high is under 10 inch around and directly under the wires, it gets cut off at ground. Palm trees of any size too.
Everything else directly below wires get flat topped 6 feet below wires.

I'm sure the average homeowner wouldn't hire someone to look at tree, because they like the shade.

April 3 or 5. ONly remember it was very early, Couple below freezing temps.
I think the ears look a little smaller. Not sure.

According to this I should cut a lot of trees around my house. A whole row of Maples along the west side been there since I was a kid. Dad has trees al around his house too.
