Starter kicks out

White 2-105 with 354 Perkins. Big solenoid on top of the starter that pushes the bendix in and out. As soon as the engine fires and gets ahead of the starter, it kicks out. No problem when the weather is fairly warm or when the engine has been running, but when it's cold, it might take 6-12 tries to get it started.

It did it 2 years ago, I took it to the rebuilder, she rebuilt the whole thing and it worked until this spring, then it started doing it again. I figured the problem had to be the solenoid, so I ordered a new one last week. I put it on and there's no change.

What else could be causing it to kick out before the engine starts? Bendix is all I can figure, but if so, why? I don't want to just keep throwing money at it. I'd sooner just buy a new gear reduction starter than keep trying to fix it or spend a lot of money at the rebuilder.

Any thoughts on why it kicks out?

I think I saws you in the parade ?? Oliver 550 Orchard ?? We looked for you later but didnt find you

500 orchard yes. We went to the hotel soon after the parade. We were in the Oliver tent most or the day Saturday. Headed home about 3:30.

It probably is, I just don't know why one gave out after just a year and a half or why it's gone through two of them. Frustrating.

It's the starter drive. There is a one way clutch that wears out and slips.

Easy to change.

Get a name brand new, not a rebuilt one. If there is a starter rebuilder close by, they might have one or can recommend a brand they trust.

If the rear main is leaking oil will get in the drive and shorten it's life. If it's an expensive one, sometimes washing one out with carb spray will but some time.

The local starter shop rebuilt it less than two years ago because it was doing the same thing, so I'm not sure how far I trust her judgement for sourcing parts, but I'll see what I can do. The rear main isn't leaking.

Yup starter drive, and if you keep using it for long with lots of starts each day, like a loader hauling manure in the winter you will eventually ruin the ring gear on the flywheel.

I have to fix it. If it's much below 50 degrees, its miserable to start. I'm still kicking around the idea of a gear reduction. It doesn't start as easy as my 1850 does in cold weather. Maybe a gear reduction would remedy that.

The original starter in my truck with L10 Cummins engine was a huge Delco Remy. It finally wore out. It went to the local rebuilder. It lasted about a year before it started messing up. Junk parts. So we put in a new light weight gear drive, I think Denso, but I'm not sure. It's enough smaller and lighter that putting it in [from underneath] was much improved. And it works great. It's been several years now.

I checked the place where I was going to order it. They have one in stock. I thought they might be out since everything else seems to be in short supply. I should probably get on the stick and get it coming.

If that 1 1/2 year old drive came from the rebuilder I knew from your area, chances are it was used. They worked out of my shop for a while and they used a constant supply of used parts, very few new ones.
