1486 with dual-speed IPTO and without TA

I have a 1486 which has dual speed IPTO i.e. both 1000 rpm and 540 rpm shafts and it also does not have the TA (which is a good thing of course). In looking through the service and parts manuals I have it leads me to wonder if I have an oddball 1486 as the manuals state 1486's were not made with dual speed IPTO's nor were they made w/o the TA's apparently. Presumably the dual-speed IPTO may have come from another tractor prior to my ownership but the TA was obviously never there from the factory as the console dash doesn't have the slot for the lever etc. Seems odd unless the manuals are not entirely accurate. 😉

Fixin to replace the front axle center section as the wear is extreme at the rear bolster pin and also trying to fix the 3pt hitch slop as it has the draft torsion tube and crank arms, not sure if I need to pull the IPTO (or not) to get the torsion tube out, looks like I do as there is a u-bolt around it in the center and from what I've read it's darn near impossible to get the torsion spring out of the torsion tube as I believe the slop is coming from the splines between the crank arms and the torsion tube most likely meaning they need to be replaced. Ideally, I'd rather have a cat-2 3pt hitch setup to be able to use cat-1 implements but doesn't seem possible unfortunately.

Hello Tim welcome to YT! While not a definative answer
looking at the CNHI online parts pages it looks like there
are some parts that are offered for a 1486 no TA or TA
delete as they are sometimes referred to. For example on
the attached page shaft number 39. It show no. 529282R2
as a part option for that position, but it gives no specific
about if it is for a machine with or without a TA but does list
it as fitting a 1486. Then as a another option it lists
529434R2 specifically saying that it fits a 1486, and
specifying that it is for a model with a TA. So if you were
ordering that shaft for you tractor you would get the first
option because you know your tractor does not have a TA.
I realize that those shafts are also listed to fit other sized
models. I also agree that the dual speed PTO could have
been installed by a previous owner. I also did not go as far
as checking if it is still available.

Not picking on you, but the TA system is a good option. They last a very long time if used often, and switched from direct to TA rapidly, and not used
to slow down like a Jake brake. Not having one is just fine, but most on this forum find them desirable. They save clutch wear from shifting then
starting from a stop. Jim

I think 1000 only was 'stock'.Many got
changed at the dealer,or were special
ordered. In the early days,TA was an
'option',but most came with it.'TA
delete is a rare thimg.My
neighbor(across the road) has a 1586
'TAdelete'.He says it doesn't have
enough gears,to much spread between
gears. But it has enough power that it
really doesn't matter much.Howrver it
ain't worth a Dan for PTO work. One gear
too slow,the next too fast.

Oh my. What don't you like about ta? I had it on a 560 and a 706. I loved it. 706 was my heavy tillage tractor at the time. It was used hard and often. Had a million hours on it when
I traded it. Not one problem with the ta. Now the gas engine was a different story. Can't help you with your questions.

a friend of mine has a 1486 bareback. no pto, no 3 pt, and no t/a. it does have a cab! woo hoo! his dad bought it years ago at a consignment auction,
it sold really cheap with out the options.

Thanks for replies, much appreciated. It is good to finally find an active forum for Red Iron. Re TA I dunno I have read about a lot of issues with em, mine doesn't have it, came factory that way and yes the tractor is a bear to shift most of the time, trans brake is obviously worn-out, and speed shift linkage/fork? is certainly not ideal, but it works, sometimes it'll have a tizzy...

On the 3pt hitch, the crank arms are extremely loose where they connect with the torsion tube esp the side where the torsion bar connects to the frame, feels as though the crank arm splines are worn out, (I have the bottom hitch assembly and crank arms off at the moment), the torsion tube splines seem ok although difficult to know for sure. Is it (un)wise to replace the crank arms only w/o replacing the torsion tube, seems as though these oughta be replaced at the same time? Replacing the torsion tube means pulling the IPTO, new seals/bushings and as I understand it a rather serious effort to get the torsion bar pressed out of the torsion tube which I'd like to avoid if possible.

Also, is it normal to be able to hand rotate the rock shaft (using the upper control arms as leverage) to the full upright position?

Thanks,
Tim

Family member bought a 79 1486MFWD with dual pto
from dealer. Tractor was rumored to have been built
for NFMS.
