Finally Got it!!!

I've been fighting the carb on my new to me Oliver 1550 all spring and summer, it wouldn't idle below 1000 rpm. I've had the carb apart more times than I can count on both hands, boiled it in vinegar and soaked it in Napa carb cleaner a couple of times. Today, I took it apart before noon and put the top part in the carb cleaner and left it in until 4. I cleaned it up and squirted carb cleaner thru it after running a wire thru the passages, put it together and started it up. It runs perfect and I got the idle speed down to 450 to 550 rpm. I took it for a short drive, 6th gear, pull the throttle back to idle and it chugs along at 500 rpm, push the throttle ahead and it smoothly increases speed. I better buy a lottery ticket!!!

That's great. At least you didn't give up. I will send you a marvel carburetor from one of my motorcycles see if you can do your magic on it. Stan

That shows u that carb cleaner does what it should do. Vinegar is for pickles. And that spray can stuff is if u have too much money.

I don't know what the low idle is suppose to be on that tractor but somebody does. Make sure you don't have it so low that it is not carrying enough oil pressure.

If I have carb problems and the cleaners doesn't do it, vinegar has fixed what other cleaners won't.

That hardly makes sense. Carb cleaner will take ur hide off or the old stuff used to. Vinegar u can drink it. Dont know what carb cleaner u are referring to ??? Vinegar is from 5-10 percent acid. Which is pretty low but if works good to clean windows also. So why dont automotive shops just buy vinegar then instead of carb cleaner for a few hundred dollars a pail ? I been soaking and putting kits in carbs when that stuff was the good old strong stuff. The carbs came out shiny clean. Plus u had an Adjitator on the pail for better cleaning. And in a shop on flat rate you do the job once not have a come back.

Its nice to soak them but ill bet running the wire through the holes is what fixed it. I fix so many lawn mowers for people on a quick fix with a bread wrapper wire that i carry one in my bill fold. They need to check there gas cans for junk in the bottom.

Water brought in through alcohol and gasoline cause corrosion and oxide deposits that is best removed by a gentle acid such as vinegar. Many metal processes include a step of cleaning with acid. After cleaning with the acid the carb cleaner provides a good flush. The acid dissolves the oxide while the cleaners help to push it around.

I believe the manual calls for 425. I've had mine that low but it sounds like it's on the verge of dying. I leave it a bit faster. It has a TSX 810, not the 903 it should have.

Leave a piece of steel in vinegar overnight, in the morning there is small bubbles coming off of the steel and looks quite impressive. Thought I messed up a carburetor once by leaving it in the vinegar to long.

Operators manual says 450 to 500 rpm. I'm surprised, if you don't dump the clutch, it will take off at that rpm.

Good chance the wire did more good than all the cleaners.
I had to use a wire to clean up my boy's honda motorcycle carb. Nothing else worked.

Has anyone tried using an ultrasonic cleaner to clean a carb? I have a 20 year old Exmark Lazer Z mower that was running poorly. I contacted an Exmark rep, who said to remove the carb and soak in the ultrasonic cleaner without disassembling. I did and was amazed at how much gunk was removed and how well it ran afterwards.

I bought the ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight...looks like a rectangle crock pot. I realize tractor carbs are a lot larger than my mower carb...but, possibly move it around in the ultrasonic cleaner to get the whole thing.
