Need help with Farmall M carburetor

We have the carburetor disassembled on the M and its pretty gummed up but with a fair amount of cleaning and a basic rebuild kit I think it will be fine. The plug is missing on the bottom. The diagram in the repair manual list it as a drip hole filler. Number 10 on the picture below. I would call it a plug. Can I just plug the hole or is there more to a drip he filler than I realize? Also whats your method to clean up a dirty carb? Thanks for the help.

For me, drip hole filler is a plug, but I am not going to swear to it. I clean carbs by removing as much external glop as I can with a tooth brush and cleaner. Once I have it close to spotless externally, I disassemble and put it in a can of carb soak. After that I blow out all the orifices and put in a kit. Works good for me.

As I recall there should be a felt plug and then a welsh plug with a drip hole in it. When you turn the tractor off, the gas that was in the intake manifold and the throat of the carburetor, will drain back down into the carburetor, and it will drip out..

This is correct. Many have missing felt. The idea is to allow condensed fule, and liquid fuel from over choking, to drain out the bottom. It is a washer like device that has a slight dish to allow it to expand into place in the hole. The felt prevents unfiltered air from entering the engine during normal running. Jim

Ok I get it now. I should be able to make a felt packing and figure out a retainer for it. Thank you all very much.

To Barn yard reengineer ya can use stainless steel wool and a small soft plug then with a number drill bit drill a small hole once you have the plug installed .
