I had to replace some drive in zerks today. You really need a 'tool' to install them properly. That tool is a 7mm deepwell socket.Fits right over the ball, and firmly sets on the base.A few taps with a small hammer and it is set and ready for action.

DeltaRed. Thank you for the tip. Especially a great idea if you have one making you work upside downor on your back depending on the situation. Appreciate the post sir. Wingnut ~ Keith

While a great idea, I will add a word of caution: DO NOT OVER HAMMER/SEAT THE ZERK. There is just enough taper on the zerk and socket edges that you can split the socket BTDT. They do sell installation tools and the round stock with a hole drilled idea does work as well.

I started doing that years ago and you do have to drive them to bottom otherwise they will fall out. And that drill and tap does NOT work as the castings are way to hard to drill. Actually McCormick is only company I have found that uses them. Have not found any on Deere, NI, Case, MF that had any.
