Tachometer Cable

The needle on the tach on my Oliver 550 started jumping all over the dial, so I figured the old tach was done for. I got a new tach and put it on, the needle still jumps around, but not as bad as the old tach. I took the cable out and greased it before changing the tachs, Is the cable going bad and needs replaced?? I had to replace the tach drive a while back because the spirals on the gear were chewed off. What's going on here???

Replace the entire cable assembly. If greasing it (oil is better) didn't fix it, the inside of the housing is worn and causing the cable to bind. When it binds, it winds up and releases, over and over, that's what causes the jumping.

If you want to try, wash the grease out, clean the inside of the housing thoroughly, wipe down the cable. Go back with light oil. You might can save it, nothing to loose.

Also the brass piece on back of the tach that the cable drives, it must turn freely and effortlessly. If it is binding it will not operate smoothly. Usually a drop of electric motor oil will fix it but the tack needs to come off and be face down so it can run in.
