Late model 4020 tire options

Hello, I currently have 16.9x38 tires on my tractor. I would like to get some new rubber but 16.9x38 in my area is gonna cost around $700 per tire. Is there other sizes I could use? I dont wanna get much bigger and get closer to the fender.

You can raise the fender I was running 480;80 38 which are a half inch wider than an 18.4.38 they are on the factory 15 inch rims

Mine had 15.5 inner and 13.6 outer when the tires were good the inner had to sink in a couple inches before the 13.6 dusk would leave a track

(quoted from post at 16:21:26 07/27/21) Didn't the ones with 38s originally have 15.5s on them?

rrlund,

16.9-38 was an option on console 4020s. 15.5-38 was also an option, but not a popular one. More common on the earlier models. Most I see have 18.4-34s.

T-nason,
18.4-38 was never offered on the 4020 from factory, but a lot of them are running around on them today. Frankly, I would just buy the 16.9-38s. $700 is not a lot of money and they will last a looong time unless you are doing a lot of road running and burn them off.

It's been a very long time since I sold/delivered new 4020's but I sure thought 18.4X38 was an option on new 4020's. I know 18.4X38 size is listed in 4020 parts catalog.

I think the last years- 71-72- they were available, and came with the 4320 style fender?????

If I'm not mistaken, the manual (at least for early 4020s) mentions 13.6 x 38 an option too. Likely for cultivating narrow rows.

Yep, tires are expensive. There's no avoiding it.

I was doing a little poking around online and you can't do much better than $700 for the cheapest 18.4x38 (Galaxy Earth Pro, bottom of the barrel IMHO) so it's really a wash.

Ivan C had two 4020s. One had 18.4 34s, the other one had 15.5 38s. That's all I know on the subject. I've seen them with 20.8 38s,
but I wouldn't want to get a finger between the tire and fender if they were turning.

Hey Jim,
You could very well be right. I do not have a 4020 manual or order list. I think they would be a better source of info on what tire sizes were available from factory versus the parts catalog. I was just going off what I had been told by others.

Researching 4020 parts catalog is much better than researching my aging memory

I agree a copy of the 4020 order form would be the best reference.

My owner's manual under a chart for rear tire carrying capacity lists tire sizes 13.6-38, 15.5-38, 16.9-34, 16.9-38, 18.4-34, 18.4-38, 20.8-34 and 23.1-30. Manual is for SN 250,001 and up.
