Mushrooms growing in a large circle

Large white mushrooms growing in an estimated 20 ft circle in Fire department's yard is turning the grass a deep green and grass is taller. The white mushrooms are popping up about 4-5 feet.

I wish I had taken a pic.

Grass loves nitrogen.

The mushroom's roots appear to be in a circle.

Are the mushrooms roots generating nitrogen?

The ring of mushrooms is making about 1 ft of the grass grow faster and deep green.

If one could figure out how to grow mushrooms, would this be a neat way to grow Nitrogen? If that's true, are mushrooms pulling Nitrogen out of the air?
Air contains a high percentage of nitrogen, around 75%.

Nothing scientific here, just my observation. Call this coffee shop talk. I haven't been to a coffee shop talking to retired people in a year and half. I hope talking about fertilizer is appropriate here. There was a lot of organic fertilizer, BS, generated in my coffee shop.

Happens here in our lower front yard ever now and then. I posted a picture of FB and someone had a name for it. Seems like they call it fairy circle but can't remember.

george...... kind of like this? fairy rings. these popped up my my grain bins the other day

That's what I'm talking about.
Fire department mows about 2.5 inches turning grass brown, except for where the mushrooms grow.
I'm wondering if the mushrooms generate nitrogen.

At Mom and Dads place there is a very large white mushroom and then a pretty large circle of green grass in a ring coming off where the mushroom is ? Very strange.

During dry season, about a 1' strip of grass along the edges of my driveway is still bright green. Does that mean the asphalt is generating nitrogen?

No, it means the dew runoff from the pavement is watering the grass along the driveway.

All nitrogen does when it is dry is burn the grass. It needs moisture to grow.

The way you describe it, these are large mushrooms? They would gather a lot of dew which would run off and water the surrounding grass.

From the University of Illinois extension webpage.

Fairy ring fungi are not attacking the grass directly, but are breaking down organic matter in the soil. As a result, nitrogen is released that the grass above may use, causing the green ring.

George, it looks like your assumption about the nitrogen release effect from mushrooms is correct.

It could mean your grass loves the rain water runoff from your driveway.

One time I made a mistake and put a birdbath next to my driveway.

Within a day, my driveway was covered with bird poo. Birds must relieve themselves on
landing or take off. I moved the birdbath so birds would fertilize the lawn,.

Wouldn't it be cool to commercially produce the fungi to make Nitrogen instead of making nitrogen from Natural gas and producing what greenies hate, CO2.

BTY, I have a few small cap stocks that are into Natural gas and making Nitrogen Fertilizer. They are paying very good dividends. I figure Farmers will always need Fertilizer. And some farmers were talking about the price increase of Nitrogen.

please post a picture of these 5 foot mushrooms!!

Ive had that in my yard. Often wondered about that. Can cross that off the giggle list.

Raising mushrooms for nitrogen will not decrease the price . Do you know how much nitrogen we have used since April ? Six million tons and thats just one branch in one valley . There are three other different companies in this one little valley besides me . All these greenies think they Can feed the world on a 20 foot row of organic corn and one rod of potatoes. Well we did it In our garden why cant you .

My thoughts. I've seen this before as well. I think if you look you will find a rodent hole in the center area. I believe this ring is the area where the rodent marks it area or pees. Just a thought, don't know if its true.

SV,
And does most of the nitrogen fertilizer come from Methane, natural gas?
6 million tons, WOW. How many tons of organic BS would it take to be equal to 6 M tons of fertilizer?
I'm guessing it would take a lot of Bulls.

the rings are from the fungus in the soil starting in the center from a spore dropped out of the wind. The fungus grows and spreads as a big circle, all the same organism! The mushrooms are only the fruiting part of the critter. Fungi are very good at scavenging nitrogen and especially phosphorous out of the soil and concentrating it so that plants in the same plant take advantage of that.

If you sneak up on those fairy ring mushrooms when the sun is setting and carefully lift up the edge of the mushroom cap, you will see little leprechauns getting ready for bed. Don't make loud noises, they don't like that !!

George,

Not commercially produced, but the no-till, cover crop crowd is talking more and more about the increase in fungi in soils... that help mineralize N, P and K from the soil and put it in a plant available form. Indeed, in wet conditions, I've observed mushrooms sand other fungi growing from organic matter in fields. Fungi and other soil life are VERY important. While it does not replace all commercial fertilizer, it can reduce some use. So your idea is somewhat of a reality already.

(quoted from post at 06:46:13 07/22/21) Guessing you're near Exmore then. My lady friend has a second home near Greenbackville. We run US-13 a lot
when we're down that way.

When not trying to farm, I run a marine lab in Wachapreague. Give me a shout and I'll give you a tour. Kind of a mess right now with construction, next year will be more settled.

Sorry to have hyjacked the thread!

My grandfather grew up in the ozarks and said you better not disturb the fair folks gathering or you will starve with a bad harvest.

Deani teaguevale noko or to thiol fin wholewake ah

Don't touch them or you will have no food lol.

That's Ozark Gaelic and I m sure I butchered the spelling lol.
