I can't mow my grass

House wren built a nest in the tool box of my Farmall C, again. Grass is getting tall and I need to mow, but I hate to move the tractor.

Had that happen on my IH584 a couple years ago. I didn't notice the nest till it was to late but probably would have run the machine any how just would have parked it where it had been

I can hang wren boxes everywhere, and they'll ignore them and build a nest in the gas funnel instead. I've wondered if I should slop some gasoline in the nest boxes to attract them?

That might be a Carolina wren. My House wrens use small twigs from trees for their nest material.

One Summer when I was in a similar situation except with a combine, I moved the nest. I nailed an empty coffee can to a nearby pole in the shed. It had hatchlings at the time and they were making enough noise I figured mom would find them. I hope she enjoyed the smell of Folgers.

I had the same problem a month ago. I had another tractor to use so it was an excuse to get to get some much needed maintenance done.

I agree, that looks like Carolina wren with the white eyebrow.

I had a house wren build a nest between the grill and radiator of my M one year. It had been parked for a few weeks and then I hooked it to a trailer and drove about a 1/4 mile from the barn and was loading firewood when I saw the mother come out of the grill. I don't know if she road along or if she followed us, but she seemed pretty unperturbed. When I was done loading wood, I parked back in the same place. Apparently the radiator didn't get hot enough to do any damage and I believe the whole family survived. A different time I found the house wren nest on top of the valve cover of my super A after I saw the bird fly out when I started it. The nest had eggs in it. So I nailed a hard hat to the pole in the shed and carefully moved the nest to the hard hat and the mother found it and started sitting again. Pretty amazing what wild things can tolerate.

I would be more worried about the nest in the upper left. They might come out and give you a lesson if you get too rough while mowing.

I enjoy birds around,,,,'except' Wrens. Very noisy and we call them 'Jack-the-Rippers'. The House Wren at least, will fill all bird boxes in the yard with sticks, to keep other birds out. And worse, they will go in other bird houses and break eggs or even stab babies. esp.Eastern Blue Birds, which is what I put out boxes for.

I wondered why a wren was singing the other day on the exhaust stack of the John Deere, then I noticed the nest she built inside one of the loader arms along with the hydraulic lines. Now it's full of twigs and sticks that I can't get out of there....

I left my engine hoist under the garage extension for a while and a wren nested in it. That's not a house wren, they're brown....and very aggressive. The males fill any available cavity with twigs that have spider egg cases on them. The female selects one to nest in and lines it with moss. She had four eggs in there.

I've never noticed the wrens bothering the bluebirds. We have had two hatchings of bluebirds this year. The bluebirds do have problems with black snakes and English sparrows.
