The mower deck clutch is stuck on. Removed power wire and clutch remains enguaged.
Something Is definitely wrong. Not looking forward to removing it. Only one bolt should be holding it to the crankcase.
Doubt if there's much I can do other than replace it.
Never had a problem like this before.
Guessing a bearings must be locked up.
I never leave the mower outside in rain. I never clean mower with water

Good chance dirt my have damaged the bearing or old age.

Have you had this happen with the electric clutch on your mower?
Repair or replace?

Really common. Those are sealed, lubed for life bearings. Only thing they don't say is that is the life of the lube. Lube drys out bearing dies. Usually preceded by a really loud noise when the deck isn't running.

Most mower makers now don't provide bearing info or replacement bearings but recommend a new clutch. However, I've successfully replaced several. Once the bearing is out use the number on it to get a new one. Some are staked in place, but a good sharp cape chisel takes care of that.

Or, just order a new clutch, but not from JD as they are available for less that 1/2 JD's list. And most give equivalent or better service. Browse eBay and make up your own mind as my opinion is free and should be regarded in that light.

Thanks. You confirmed my suspicion bearings locked up. I'll get it off and order one.
I do have a used one off a husqvarna. Do you think all clutches are the same?
Never had to replace one.

I doubt they are all the same George. Different shaft sizes, different expectations of hp they will have to handle. It's basically a magnet that engages the clutch. All I know is they want an arm and at least part of one leg for some of them.

I had the exact opposite problem you are having. I was scared of my kids using my ancient Jacobsen rider, so I bought a brand spankin' new Craftsman (foolishly thinking that the 2000-ish models were like the old ones in the 70's. Everytime you backed up the clutch shut off, so some idiot wouldn't run over someone I guess. Anyway, about the 137th time I hit the reverse the whole clutch assy dismounted itself from the crank and went zipping across my lawn, across the road and about 75 yards out into a field! Almost $300 later, I had a new one and loc-tited that sucker on there!

There are probably two or three bolts holding a backing plate in place on the crankcase.
This is in addition to the bolt that goes through the clutch and into the crankshaft.
You will need to remove the deck and maybe some sheet metal to find the clutch.

Be careful of the wiring connector and pry it off the clutch with a small screwdriver.
Don't try to pull it off.

There are dozens of different electric clutches. They vary by crankshaft diameter, pulley diameter, width (A,B) of pulley, even direction ( clockwise or ccw). Most are singles, but some are doubles. As already mentioned, if you can source the correct one from other than Deere, you will save considerable money. I don't know about your model of Deere, but any I have worked on are secured only by the bolt in the end of the crankshaft and a bracket or simple lever that prevents the clutch body from rotating. Occasionally, they can be seized to the crankshaft and quite difficult to remove, but usually will slide off with minimal persuasion. Good luck.

The PTO clutch on my LX176 was getting noisy and hard to turn. When the blades were off, they stopped turning right away. Luckly had a spare handy to replace it with. Think over time, the bearing grease deteriorates due to heat and use. The original engine blew on mine and some oil got into it. The bearings in mine were made here in Michigan.

George, I know how you love to save money. But if you also like saving time, there is a PTO clutch assembly for your machine on Amazon for $170. Better yet, Amazon has one in their Warehouse Deals for only $95.33. Says in [i:4df3c1cf49]Very Good condition - item comes in original packaging, packing damaged[/i:4df3c1cf49].

We get the Warehouse Deals stuff every chance we can, so long as in Very Good or better condition. Some of the items we've gotten, we can't even tell why it was sold other than Brand New.

Try this site for clutches: https://xtremeope.com/p/pto-clutch-for-snapper-pro-lt-180h-hydro-series-d-f-g-h-i-tractor/

Getting a stuck one off is no harder than a unstuck one. Should come off easy, getting underneath the mower is the hardest part. Good Luck!
