Leak detection dye

What do you suppose the difference is between coolant and oil

Not 100%. I think back when R12 was replaced with 134A the 134 wasn't compatible with old oil. So this oil/dye might be compatible with newer refrigerant. Just guessing.

Good luck finding leaks. Some leaks are next to impossible to locate.

If I have a leak in a refrigerator or window AC, I buy a new one.

Actually bought to find where the crack was in a cummins 53 block the crack was so small you couldnt see it but it was dumping a gallon of coolant a day , just wondering if I could use the dye in transmission oil

SCcommins,

Viscosity and lubricity. Bottle is clearly mark for extended life coolant.

I think it will not work,

SV,
Years ago I had a 91 grand caravan that I couldn't find the coolant leak,
So I put a paper clip under the radiator cap so radiator couldn't build pressure, instead it pushed coolant into the expansion tank. Stopped using coolant. Year or two later I was driving, water pump locked up and that's when I discovered where the anti freeze was leaking out, water pump bearing. Coolant would be sprayed on hot engine only when car was running. See if you can run without a pressurized radiator.

My guess is it would be a different base for a dye designed to mix with water versus a dye designed to mix with oils.

Would be like try trying to mix oil based paint with latex, just going to curdle and ball up.

Easy enough to try mixing a few drops with some of the oil you want to add it to and see if it disperses.

Something with an alcohol base might be able to disperse in either fluid.

I still have a bottle of that stuff I bought in a detection kit years ago.
I never use it as it seems most modern coolants show up just fine by themselves with the black/purple light in the kit.

I don't know but I don't see why you can't use a little bit of food coloring. Guess I'll add some to some drain oil or a small amount of oil to see what happens. Can get PAG oil with a dye but a little pricy.
