When I was discharged from the Navy in 1968, I just got in my car and headed home, I don't remember anyone one saying, thanks for your four years. I recently saved 244.00 from Home Depot's 10 % military discount. On my house floor tiles. I use the discount almost every time I buy from them. Anyone else use their discount? Stan

Yep but with Lowes. Several big ticket items. I now have a copy of my DD 214 that I keep handy for more opportunities to save some money. Thanks for the tip on HD. Will take my paper with me next time I go.

hen I got out, Vietnam returnees were not treated well, but I went to work for a company who's only customer was the military, so the environment for us was pretty nice. I patronize HD, Lowe's and others like them, too.

Stan~ I knew nothing about a 10% military discount. Did they ask for a copy of your DD 214? Keith (Wingnut)

I went for years myself without knowing about the discount. I think your DD214 would work. A military ID card is better it has your picture. You can apply for one At your local VA office. Do a web search to find your VA location, Stan

Also with Lowes. I've used both over the years. A year ago, our daughter built a new deck on the rear of her house and bought all of the material at Lowes. It even worked with her giving my phone number and saved her over $500.

After you register with Lowes, all the clerk at checkout needs to do is enter your phone number and the computer takes 10% right off the top.

To get the discount from Lowe's take your DD214 to customer service and ask to apply for the military discount. They will scan you DD214 and get your phone number. To use the discount tell the cashier you have a military discount and they will ask for your phone number. You need to provide an ID so they make sure it is you and you get the 10% discount. Home Depot used the "Choose VA" card that you apply for at the VA. You can apply for the Choose VA card on line. The Choose VA card works in a bunch of places.

I tried years ago. But was told National Guard was not military. So I showed them my Navy ID card. I joined the NG after the Navy. Told thanks for nothing. Never went back.

wingnuttx,

I got mine through the local county clerk.
VA may do it too.
Just used mine today.....

I have the 10% discount at both Home Depot and Lowe's. I still have my old Navy ID card from when I was discharged back in 1966. At both HD and Lowe's, that was all that required to set up my discount. I do have to remember to ask for it when I'm checking out and I always pull my ID card out of my wallet, but they never really look at.

WI issues drivers licenses with a vet designation so I don't have to haul around my dd-214 or find my old I'd.....about the only extra benefit I use is one of the local groceries has 2 parking spaces reserved for vets....

Sure glad your getting something off of that store . They will NOT honor mine , My Drivers license says Veteran my cars and truck say Purple Heart Veteran , Lowes on the other hand i get the 10% .

I can't get past the National Guard was not the military.

My uncle Ralph lived through it while in the 105th Infantry Regiment,(click below) NY Army National Guard, awful what these soldiers went through in the south pacific. If that is not the military....
105th

Texasmark,

Take a minute a READ all it's in your discharge papers. You may not want them to have some of the info.

Like your SS# for one,

Guido.

Billy S, I believe the date this changed was January 2015, after that date National Guard Service is considered as Veteran qualifying service. I had to present my DD214 from active duty and state issued discharge form to my local county veteran service officer for veteran ID which here is placed on your Drivers Lisc.

I also use my VA card and get
10% at Home Depot.
However, I only use it for my own purchases.
As a small contractor I bought a Lot of stuff at HD for my customers too but never used it for them. Never mention to them that I am eligible for it. It didn't seem right to use it that way.
Over the last 5 years we put a large addition on our house and built a new garage. Probably $30-$40K in materials. That 10% did help.

You should enjoy it while you can. It's a good program but contractors and plumbers are abusing it. It was meant for individuals, not their businesses. Around here they used to use the military discount and add the store card discount on top of that. Too many businesses taking advantage cost them so much they had to change policy to one of the other and not both.

I needed something from a store that offered a military discount. I was there with a friend who is a veteran. He said let me buy it with my military discount. So I let him. When we left the store I paid him the full price, telling him that he deserved it not me. We were both happy.

Something I didn't know; if there's a Menard's near your Home Depot, you can fill out a form at Home Depot's web site and they'll rebate you the 11% Menard's discount if Menard's sells the same item. I used it on a Chamberlain Garage Door Opener that Menard's normally sells but were out of stock. Home Depot doesn't advertise this; I found out from my daughter that's building a house in Minnesota.

It's easier than that if you apply through Lowe's website. They have your info checked by a separate entity (ID me) and then add it to your My Lowe's card.

hat a maze?! What an absolute PITA!!! I have been trying for over 2 hours (computer and phone) to make this VA application with dead ends everywhere. I give up! at today's labor rates, I'm a good $200 into this with Zero to show for it.

You should go to the pro desk and ask for a contractor discount. All of them offer something. I get the veterans discount from lowest and home cheapo.

Some McDonalds offers a 10% veterans discount as well. You have to ask. So does Chick fil a and a bunch of others. Same for Advance auto parts. Giggle veterans discounts restaurants. Here is a list from parade magazine which has about 270 companies of all types.
