John Deere H - muffler/exhaust sound improvement?

Can I improve the classic sound of the two-banger with a larger diameter muffler?
If I recall, the wider pipe gives a lower sounding tone. That's what I'm going for.
Will a larger/wider pipe fit through the hood on the H? It looks like the steering shaft is right next to it.
 
I made a straight pipe for my H.
I don't like loud noises but on an H is just makes a really nice sound.
I did make the dent in it so the steering rod would not hit it.
To me, it sounds great, especially when my son is using it to cultivate something about 200 yards from my shop.
It is pretty mellow and not harsh.
The Bear insisted on this last photo being posted.

Not too good.
It is very difficult for him to get his back legs under him when he gets up.
Once he is standing, he walks pretty well.
Yesterday evening, I went with him walking around the garden and he got lost since he can't see.
I finally got him headed in the right direction to get back to the shop.
I expect to have to have him put down any day now when he can't get moving.
