Made a start

Got started barning baccer this morning.
Always glad to start and always glad to
get the last leaf cured. As long as all of

will go good. Lol.

Yes I know what you are feeling all to well. Did the excessive rain of a few weeks ago drown any of your crop?

Interesting. I know its a busy time for you but can you post more pictures of your operation? I grew up on a dark fired farm in the 60s and 70s. About thirty acres total, all manual labor. Never seen a machine like that.

We had to hand cut it,,,stick it,,,then haul it to barn to hang till air cured, Then get a damp cool day to strip and tie into hands for sale. We were already cutting brush to burn the next year's tobacco bed for seed planting before this year's crop was sold. A lot of work>

I wish you the best with a heavy crop that the contract buyer wants. Any auctions left down your way? One in Rural Hall, NC may still be open this year.

I'm in the foothills of NC, ours isn't quite ready yet. It sure is good to hear someone else call it baccer. My wife gets on to me for calling it that lol.

o tobacco farming here and I know nothing about it. What is the machine?

Thank you. No, afraid not. 2019 was the first year that there was not any kind of tobacco market in Kinston since the 1890's. Everything has moved to Wilson which is where our nearest receiving station is.

These machines are a Long Mfg tobacco
harvester. There are 4 people riding on
the bottom cropping off the ripe leaves
and they send them up a belt to ultimately
wind up in the dumpbox on the back. There is 1 person up top to keep an eye on everything . From
there it will go to the barns to be boxed
up to cure/dry for 7 to 10 days.

I used to enjoy a good cigarette or a cigar once in awhile so thanks for your hard work . Hopefully you wont be legislated and taxed out of business any time soon .

Thanks for the education on the machine. I had no idea. When do you plant tobacco? What is done to it for the season?

I've bought some equipment from him. It's mind boggling to see his operation. I lost count after barn number 100. He was barning 7 days a week, sun up to sundown when I was there.
