Normally I don't answer a number I don't have in my phone book.
Lately if I'm not busy, I will press answer and not say a word.
In about 15 seconds I'll say hello and get nothing.
Outsmarting the robo computer. It's expecting someone to talk right away.
Sometimes I'll call back and Verizon says number is no longer in service.
Time to block the call because sometimes the robo computer will call me again.

Try it.

I say I don't Know You. 90% of the time there is no response to that, so I block the number. If it is a real call I need, they identify themselves with pertinent speech. Jim

Sometimes if I don't answer the robo computer will leave a message as soon as my telephone answers it. So I only get half the message from robo computer.
That number gets blocked.

Every time you answer one of those calls, your number gets labeled as real and active. I just made my voicemail msg realllly long. Less bogus msgs to delete later. On my home ph I have a machine so I set the number of rings to the max. The robo calls timeout after 5 or 6 and hangs up. Again no msg to delete later, After a few months to a year the number of calls went down.

I hated to do it, but I finally had to quit answering anything that isn't in my phone list.

It just got overwhelming. Every day at 12:19 I get a call, last warning my car warranty has expired, always a different number, enough already!

If it's real, they will leave a message.

Problem is if you answer, even if you say nothing they think they have a live one and move you to the head of their list.

es. That makes your number more valuable, and they have lots of customers that will pay for it.

I have my IPhone set where if your number is not in my contacts the phone does not ring and goes straight to voice mail. Works great for me. If it is important they an use a voice mail.

If Caller ID indicates a call is junk, I'll sometimes answer the phone in Japanese and if it's a real live person I'll continue talking to them in Japanese. It drives them nuts. Most of them hang up themselves without finishing their spiel.

I don't know if it's effective, but it's fun.

I've said it before and I will say it again...

IF, the phone companies would simply make it impossible to spoof the caller ID, a lot of this would go away.

These robocallers are mostly violating the do not call registries, and most of them are calling from some call center overseas.

If your caller ID said you were getting a call from India, the Philippines, or some other far away exotic place, would you answer it? Since we have no legal jurisdiction in other countries, how else could it be enforced? Just make the caller ID indicate TRUTHFUL information, and most of it would go away almost overnight.

Call your congressman. Ask for legislation to force the phone companies to put an end to spoofing the caller ID.

I got a call and my phone showed that it was from MN. Some guy wanted me to sub for him for the golf league. I was glad that I answered it. While I was golfing I got two calls that I was about to be arrested. So the next time I got a call from an unknown number I answered it with,Am I being arrested. It was a guy who wanted to buy an old riding mower. He was laughing when he said hello.

I got one of those I said good will you cover my 2002 dodge pickup ? it has 250000 miles on it( I lied it has 115000) the sucker hung up

Dunno HOW you think you "win" or outsmart a robocall?
NOT answering/ignoring them works for me!

When you answer it lets the &%##^ know it's a working number, how do YOU benefit from that?

You must be LONELY!

Ever since I got home from. Hospital/rehab. I get 5-10 an hour. I just let the phone answer them. Or I unplug it.

Ringer is always off on my phone, thing doesn't make a sound. I look at it when I want, if i missed a call and they didn't leave a message nothing to worry about. If it's important they'll leave a message. So far haven't had one solicitor or robo call leave a message.

I haven't answered my telephone in years due to robocalls and solicitation calls.

It has taken several years but the frequency of such calls has diminished.

I've been ignoring numbers I don't know for a while on my cel and landline. If it's important they'll leave a message. I specify texting in my FB ads for that reason. What I hate is numbers from my local exchange. Never know if I should pick up. I even got calls from my own number a few times.

I started keeping track and have logged 4 different numbers trying to sell me auto maintenance insurance when vehicle warranty expires.....My vehicles are 10 years old. 70% of the time the number isn't a working number....how they work that, i don't know...had to call from somewhere.

Just what we need, another unfunded mandate...

My day job is with an ILEC, Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier, aka, "the telephone company." Stopping the robo calls is simply not a "simple" task. A sizeable part of the telephone switching system in this country is antiquated. They're insecure and easy to hack. This is what the robo callers are using to gain entry and spoof numbers.

There is nothing that telephone companies can do about it in the near term, except shut the old switches down. However, to shut them off would mean cutting off service to the people using those switches, which would violate Federal mandates and pizz off the few remaining customers. The only solution is to replace it with modern switching equipment, which is not cheap and takes time. Telephone companies are not exactly flush with money with everyone dropping their land lines in favor of cellular service.

From time to time law enforcement has legitimate need to spoof numbers. When I was working major crimes 30 years ago we had to call a special number at the phone company and use a code to get it done, but we needed it from time to time.

Right, they're working WITH the telephone company to do that.

The robo callers are sending signals that fool old insecure switching equipment, which then passes the information on.

The dumbest move these robo callers make is calling your cell phone from the same exchange, as if it was a land line. When people would call you from the same local exchange you didn't have caller ID so you didn't know who was calling anyway. What makes them think that calling a cell from the same exchange will make people think it's "local?"
