I am about to buy an 8n Ford that has sat inside for 15 years. They said the reason they parked it was because water got in the oil. They said I could probably change the head gasket to see if it fixes it. The only worry I have is the water in the oil might have rusted the engine internally, but I think I could get it for cheap, so I will probably get it. But if the head gasket blew, what caused it? Or is there another reason for the water? Any advise is appreciated.

Head gaskets blow because of over heating or over working and engine simple as that. But if it sat that long and then didn't make sure the cylinder didn't have water in them good chance the engine is locked up and will need a total engine rebuild sleeve etc.

From this vantage point, there are many possible reasons. Bad head gasket from old age. Bad head gasket from warped head, or off flat block deck. Cracked block (various places), and leaking sleeves are two more. Taking it apart is really the only real option. This site had many optional Kits for repair/rebuild. Jim

Keep looking much better tractors out there with much less work. Those N's suck if your not used to no live hyraulics or PTO. Pto has to be engaged to lift the 3 point and silly things like that.

Oil sits on top of water.
See how much overfilled the oil is.
Ask if you can drain oil.
See if you can crank engine.
Buy it right price for a parts tractor.
Keep in mind it's a 70+ year old tractor.
Good tires may be worth more than the tractor.
Bad tires may be a deal breaker.

Only good for getting the mail or pulling around a pail full of used tea bags right?

Keep spreading the fertilizer.
