JD 4230 Jumpy clutch

I know this has been addressed before and I know the springs in the clutch valve (Quad Range transmission) probably need to be replaced due to the tractors age. The question I have is, if when I test the pressure at the clutch valve and it's either in or out of spec, there are shims that can go in to adjust the pressure in 5psi increments and I cannot find the part number for these shims in my JD parts book does anyone know it? Also do the shims go under the upper spring or the lower spring? I know historically these clutches are jumpy by nature but some feathering would really be nice especially with a loader. Many thanks in advance for information.

Proper/adequate clutch pressure is important for long clutch life, but a little more or less clutch pressure won't have much effect on smooth clutch engagement, IMHE.

I have this diagram and it is part #19. But in another post someone mentioned the upper and lower springs which are in the outer part of the housing that needed shimmed which didn't make sense to me, and I didn't see any shims. I think they meant the outer and inner springs associated with shims, and not the upper and lower. Thank you.

Sounds like that involves the clutch operating valve.

24, 26, 28, etc..

No selective shims there from the factory, someone may have come up with a "field repair" that involves adding shims in that area?

I think it was more of a miss-statement rather than a different repair. Since seeing that, I have looked everywhere and no one else has mentioned it. Regards.

I've heard of guys replacing the springs, 26 and 28, and possibly improving the clutch engagement.

I see there's a serial number 'break" on them.

Don't think so they seem tight. It does it mostly in the lowest gears not in the higher so I'm thinking springs and shims may help a little. Thank you for the input just the same.

I am going to try that. The pressure is running about 125# which is a little low so I'm thinking that may help. Appreciate your comments.

(quoted from post at 20:57:44 06/20/21) You mean #16 & #18 I assume. Thnx.

No, 26 and 28.

I see. Your parts diagram is different than mine in my parts/repair manuals. So you are talking about replacing the springs that operate the clutch valve itself rather than the ones operating the pressure regulating valve? Maybe a person should change all 4 of them? Appreciate your follow up. I'll have to check the parts diagrams.

Second question, would you think replacing the valve itself would be helpful at all? They are pretty pricey and may not help, but a jerky clutch is not fun when hooking up equipment or trying to ease into anything with a loader. Thank you again.
