Alternator on 1105

I put a new alternator(I think it is a 42 amp) on my 1105 Massey w/o a cab and the gauge goes clear over to 60. The alternator gets very hot and after I turn the tractor off it stays hot until I take the hot wire off. What is going on with it?

Why would you think so without testing it? If it's not a single wire self exciter and it's putting out 60 amps, it's way more likely a regulator problem.

So the regulator cutout is not cutting out. The question is why? Does the battery also get hot? I think I'd start by taking a current clamp and pulling the fuses one at a time and see where all that current is going. You obviously have a ground somewhere. It could be a bad battery. It could also be a dead short in the alternator or regulator. That said, you burnt an alt already and this one is enroute to the same fate so I'd wager the problem is somewhere in the electrical system. So start isolating loads and narrow down where/when the current is going to ground with a clamp. I doubt the new alt is bad but you never know.

" So the regulator cutout is not cutting out."

There's NO "cutout" in the voltage regulator that would be used with either type of alternator that would have been used here.

Lets start at the beginning, WHAT alternator do you have?

One source shows a Delco 10DN being used with the earlier versions with Waukesha engines and Delco 10SI being used with Perkins engines.

Or, has it been converted to something else, a "one-wire" alternator, perhaps?
