Masonry vs metal building

I forgot how much cooler my old masonry 2 car garage workshop is on hot sunny days. I had to get something out of the garage this morning.
It was nice and cool.
My pole barn is uninsulated

And solar heat.
Big difference in masonry vs uninsulated metal.

NO wood walls.
It looks like a brick building, but it's locally made 8 inch wide block that looks like brick. I found a man who he and his brother made the block. Like all block, it has air spaced inside.
There are a few garages in my hood made form this unique block.

My dad told me about a house his grand parents had up in MN. They where told it would be hard to heat and keep cool but the people that said that where wrong. They found out why when they added on to it. It was rock on the out side and inside but between 2 rock walls was 10 inch of sawdust so it was easy to heat and back then there wasn't AC but yet it stayed cool in side in the summer

We had log cabins on our place built for the railroad expansion during WW2 and then used as tourist cabins. They had bins along the outside walls about 2 feet high filled with sawdust. Remarkably warm floors in those places with nothing but a kerosene pot burner furnace.

Went on a weekend get away several years ago in Jefferson Tx.

Jefferson is a very old town, lots of history, old buildings...

Went walking and exploring the town, it was a very hot summer day. Walked by the remains of one of the many boarded up old buildings, one of the windows was missing the glass, and for whatever reason there was chilled air blowing out the window!

It literally felt like there was an air conditioner running inside, but the building was in terrible condition, unoccupied, and falling down. All I can come up with was there must have been a basement with some kind of underground air source. Really strange!

My shop is stick built, 6 inch walls, 20 inches of insulation in the attic, and it still hasn't gotten above 70 inside, and I haven't run the air yet. I only heat it to 45 in the winter, it takes a long time to heat the slab up, I don't leave the door open when it's 90 outside.
