IH 656 Exhaust Manifold Heat Contol Question

Really Enjoy your website!
Having an issue with my 656 cutting out and stopping after about 60 -90 minutes of use. I let it stand for 30 minutes and it runs again. Few years ago thought it was a fuel line issue due to debris so raised fuel line into tank about 2 inches to reduce plugging of the filter. Had thermostat replaced - same issue
Wondering if the exhaust manifold heat control spring is not working?? Last Fall the spring came off during field work and when I moved the sloted bolt that spring attached to close the valve it
seemed to help Wondering if spring not working properly before it fell off would cause cutting out

Thank you !

Tom

Sounds like it has a gas engine & not the diesel. If so, first determine whats causing the engine to stop. Does it still have spark when it dies? My first thought is the coil going bad and cutting out when its hot, then restarting after it cools down.
Let us know if it still has a good blue spark at the plugs immediately after it dies.

Probably not, but it is important to have the heat control working. If the vane inside is free to move, all can be good.
Install a good thermal spring (which is a bimetallic thermo sensitive opening device. A cable operated control could be
fabricaed to move it as well, but it would require thinking when starting and operating especially in winter. When it starts
to sputter and loose power, feel the ignition coil. They internally short and get overheated. If it is nasty burn you bad
hot, replace it. Jim

Thank you for the tip! I will try this -replace the coil.
Being the tractor 656 gas is 40 + years would you know where and what coil I should be looking for?

It's not clear to me if the spring got lost, or if you found it and put it back on?

Thermal spring is part #82958R2, $80.25 at the dealer. (WOW!)

If you GOOGLE the part number, aftermarket replacements can be found for some $20.

The link below is to a previous thread on how the spring is installed, note pete23's comment on how it works.

Spring relaxes when hot allowing weight to "fall", closing off intake manifold heat.

As to the coil, IH used a coil REQUIRING an external resistor.

ASSUMING no one has changed the wiring you can get a CIH #
396547R93GV at the dealership for about $21, or a good autoparts store can probably cross referance that number or an older number, 385402R91, to the parts they sell.
