My vet used to jokingly say a cow could smell if the electric fence wasn't working. It sure never took long for them to figure it out.

I had a old Jersey that learned she could take a shock, and just keep going, and get through the fence into the corn. So long as she didnt knock the wire down, other cows wouldnt follow, but if she knocked down the wire, everyone would be out. Old Jersey got to stay in the barn for a while.

That ain't no joke. As a kid we had one that would walk up to the fence and test it. I think he was using his nose hairs and feeling for a tickle.

My dad always said the sows could smell the fence and tell when it wasn't working.

Dad had a system. If they had a problem - breaking out , losing a calf , getting injured - they got a hog ring in their ear. Three hog rings and it was Hello Ronald McDonald.
