Hey all. Cutting hay for about hour. Turned around to head back on next row 3020 gas acted like someone turned off the tractor. No sputter nothing just off. Tried reastart nothing towed to shed and tried to start after cool down nothing. Next day went out and it started up. So kinda puzzled. Originally thought coil but dont think so as it started next day. Just replaced fuel pump and there was fuel in bowl of carb when it quit. Any thoughts are appreciated thx

Mine had done something similar. Was either the condensor or coil. Replaced both with old parts on hand. No problem since.

Could easily be the coil or condenser as they quit when hot and work when cold. Did you check for spark? Use a test light and make sure you have power all the way through.

Trouble shoot it.
Run it till it dies and then check for a good spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more.
Then if you have spark pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have fuel there

Carry a test light with you, be ready to trouble shoot when you catch it in the act.

You can use the probe of the test light to check for spark by holding it inside the plug wire boot.

Then check for power to the coil. No power at the coil is usually the ignition switch.

Touch it to the distributor side of the coil primary, it should flash as the engine is cranked. Steady on, the points are not making contact. No light, the points are closed, the condenser is shorted, or the coil is open internally.

Check the temperature of the coil. It should not be uncomfortable to the touch, or considerably hotter than the surrounding components. Could be the coil is failing or the wrong coil, or coil/resistor combination.

Thank you!!! Ill rake Sunday with it see what happens. Thanks for test light info too..

There was fuel in bowl after it shut down. Thats what made me think coil right away

Thanks again

I would not attempt to use a 12/6 volt test light for spark checking. It would not light, and might provide a high voltage learning experience.
Or help me learn, I have a lot of respect for your opinion here on YT. Jim
