Friend has this baler, says he can't slow the thrower belt down. It's slinging bales 40-50 feet. Says that there are missing parts?

The thrower speed control crank is missing, find a book for it should self explanatory. I used to have one like it.

Kevin I have a manual for a New Holland 53A thrower and cant find it this minute. Its been close to 30 years ago I had a New Holland but I throttled down when baleing even though you are supposed to be at PTO speed. Definitely missing parts I think you can adjust it so its not launching them to the moon and not have to keep readjusting it. I ran some old New Hollands starting with a 66 68 271 and 273. Then had a IH 430 I cobbled a New Holland thrower on. It worked but wasnt reliable. We had a local monthly equipment auction my dad and I would go to and find some treasure to drag home. Found an old IH 47 baler with a newer IH thrower and put that one on the IH 430. In 1990 traded that in on a New CaseIH baler. Still had trouble with it but was not operator error dealer gave me the wrong PTO which I spotted when they delivered it.

A temporary fix would be to adjust the threaded rod in the second picture so the sheave has the largest diameter which slows the belt down or where it works for you, you could put a make shift handle on it but then you would need to get off the tractor to make the adjustments. As mentioned the crank and adjustment handle, hose are missing.

Ideally you should make adjustments while the baler is running. Just like a drill press or mill with a variable sheave. Allows the belt to work the sheave open and not stretch the belt.

Boy, that is a nice looking thrower for its age. Is you friend rich? If so, buy all the missing parts the other posters have mentioned. If not, grab your vise grips and turn the large threaded 'screw I believe clockwise. I can see from your 1st posted picture that the drive belt off the flywheel is very deep in the sheave. You want to turn the screw so that tension is relieved on the sheave and the drive belt moves shallow in the sheave. That will make the thrower belts spin slower.

Have your friend check with his local dealer for the missing parts. Also check with Fry Machinery in Muncy PA for used parts.
