90W Gear Oil Info

I've got a gear box that takes 90w oil. I want to have some on hand to add and I do NOT want to use 80-90w oil.

Any general info on straight 90w gear oil, ratings, i.e. GL1, etc., brand recommendations would be most appreciated.

Thanks!
Bill

It's hard to find a straight wt gear oil now a day's. GL1 is a plain mineral oil. For a gearbox you need ep additives that it doesn't have. I would suggest GL 4 or 5. 50wt motor oil has ep additives and is supposed to be the same viscosity as 90wt. Auto parts stores still have it for the old Harley Davidson's.

I need 80-90 Gl with limited slip additive.
Valvoline used to sell it. Now I buy 75-90 Gl with limited slip additive for Valvoline.
I can't tell the difference.

The auto parts store in the small town near me stocks it and other farm related supplies somewhat. Another in a larger town 25 miles away who used to support restorers (before they all died off) still stocks it.....in he 5 gallon bucket. I still have a half a tub in the shop from my old Ford tractores when I had them.

OK, I'll ask then ..... why do you not want to use 80W90? Do you think you are gong to have problems with it of some kind?

Your best reference will be the manufacturers specifications.

The GL1 is safe for yellow metals, it has no anti wear additives.

EP oil, what is commonly sold as multigrade gear oil at the auto supply, has the EP additives, which are needed for hypoid type gears.

These additive packages are more critical than whether it is single or multigrade oil.
