Battery tray corrosion

Just changed the battery in my Ford tractor, [3 cyl. diesel] The battery tray, hold down bracket and batt cable ends all had white corrosion on them. Was my old battery leaking acid? The stuff did wire brush off fairly easy, but my concern is injectors and lines run right under the tray.
Any thoughts how I can prevent this in the future? thanks in advance.

I agree with Geo, you need a better battery. We had the same problem with our JD4600 when it was new, the JD dealer gave us a new Strongbox battery. It wasn't sealed, but it had a place for a vent hose that hung down below the tractor, like they used to do on motorcycles. That battery lasted 12 years, the tractor was in an unheated shed on the Canadian border where it gets real cold, sat all winter with no maintainer, and always started in the spring!

It could have been leaking. Easy to break the posts loose, sometimes they are broken during shipping.

An old, failing battery is more prone to outgassing, which will carry acid out with it as it requires more charging to stay alive.

Sealed batteries are better, especially in an off road vehicle that gets bounced around.

If the tray will come out all the better. Clean it up, clean up under it with a pressure washer and baking soda, wire brush the rust and corrosion away.

Might try a bare metal primer, then something like bed liner spray to protect it.
