1962 Ford 641

Hey guys. So I have the opportunity to purchase a 1962 Ford 641 diesel. The owner (a good friend of mine) is selling it as he no longer needs it. It is a little beat up and needs some various fixes but my biggest concern is that it smokes while it run. Now I know it has the 144 motor in it and I was wondering what everyone thought about the smoking issue. It comes with a front plow setup, bush hog, and a 3 point lift arm. I went and looked at it yesterday and after sitting for 5 years we jump started it and it started right away. In all honesty it actually smelled like diesel fuel and not oil was smoking but I had also had a few beers (whoops). For $800 is this thing still worth fixing even if it comes with the implements?

You should have paid the man before he
could change his mind. I wouldn't worry
about the smoke as my 851 has always
done it.

Man I was expecting a lot more replies. Kind of thought this would've been a hot topic.

Don't worry though. I plan on picking up the tractor fairly soon. I just have to find all the parts to fix her up. Anyone know of any 172 diesel motors for sale?

The downside to that tractor is that the motor has not been supported. Compared to most of the other old Fords, sales were relatively low so there is little demand for parts, so there is no production of parts and few in salvage yards. You may get many years of service from it, or it could become unrepairable next week. If the motor were unworkable a gas engine, which is very readily available, could be swapped in.
