SV, I bet the 3020 doesn't pull this one...

Well, I sold the plow... not been out of the shed since 1989, but it emerged yesterday. It goes to Ohio.

8x 16's, new in 1970.

Dad and uncle bought the plow new with a 5020 in 1970. They were growing a lot of continuous corn, and corn blight meant swapping the chisel plow for a moldboard plow to bury more residue. The 5020 pulled the plow for 10 seasons... and ended its life prematurely when my dad and 5020 got hit with a train!

Dad walked away, the 5020 died. A 4840 and then 4850 pulled the plow after that, with a 10 foot disk hooked to the back to complete one pass tillage.

I'm told the 5020 would handle the plow in 3rd gear. The goal was not to see how deep or fast one could plow, just to bury the residue.

I'm not certain, but I think this was the biggest plow in the Deere catalog in about 1969 or 70... and plow technology changed significantly in the 70's, with greater clearance, variable width, etc.

Here you go...

4840, plow, disk, harrow, anhydrous. Late April, 1986. This was also the first year we no-tilled one field...

I apologize for the lousy picture quality.

There's a video of a Case IH front wheel assist with duals all around- not the big articulated type tractor- with a 12 bottom semi mounted plow working in sod. Couldn't believe it!

If you don't wish to share, that's okay but I'm curious to the details of the train accident. Did the tractor kill on the tracks and Dad jumped off? Left it parked on a rarely used track while he walked home for lunch? Train pulled out in front of him?

Thats a great picture, I like seeing how they made things work years ago. You hooked together what you had to make it work. Dad used a 900 and DC case to pull a 22' digger. Uncle got a good deal on a 18' disc at auction and had a 560 Ih. Neighbor who wanted the disk said he would never pull it, stopped by the next day had my uncle had is dc hooked to the 560 working ground.

They should as they come well over 300hp now. My uncle pulled 12-18s with a 300hp case 2870.

Where did the anhydrous get injected? Can't figure how you got it in the ground without loosing a lot with that rig. They really pushed one pass tillage back then. Dad had what was called a tillage saver, just a cultivator that went on the three point and hooked the planter behind. Had wings with a cable affair that bolted to the drawbar so when you raised it the wings folded so you could turn with the planter. Dad used it for a decade.

The anhydrous went on with the harrow bar atached to the plow. We usually had much more loss if just using a toolbar...

A drag to level off for planting right behind the plow. They are semi effective if the soil is right. I have one laying out back that is just a pipe with spikes on it. My brother pulled a rolling packer behind his plow to do similar. Worked ok in lighter and dry soils. This one is a deluxe version as most were lighter duty.

I think I've shared that here before... and I will have to dig for pics. Feb 10th, 1980. Dad was using the 5020 (just back from overhaul) to haul manure, as the 4020 was in the shop. We have a crossing near the farm, and there is a cut to the south east. He claims he did not see the train, due to the sun, the snow, etc. It was also only two engines and a caboose, so it is likely he looked past the train, and didn't see it in the foreground.

Anyway, the train hit the 5020 right ahead of the cab, and broke the tractor in two at the bell housing. He flew out a window, and landed in the snowbank. The rear tire came off the center casting; they found his glasses under the tire.

He walked away, and flagged down the ambulance. He had a separated shoulder, but otherwise was OK. If you are wondering, I was in 1st grade, I remember my teacher asking if that was your dad?

While he was getting better, we got color TV :)

A few years ago I posted a picture similar to yours only mine was a 630 hooked to a Deere 2500 5x18 spring reset plow. I even tried it out in the field just to see how the 630 could pull it. Someone on here gave me a bunch of guff about abusing the 630. LOL The 630 handled it surprisingly well in second gear at 5 or 6 inches deep.

I remember that... and in this case, the 4455 has the same or more HP as the original 5020 had... but not quite as heavy.

We had one of those hydraulic automatic reset plows with that exact same mounted drag but it was a 5 bottom behind a 4020. Used later behind IH 806 we had to rig up a pressure increase cylinder to get pressure in the reset tank up to JD level. Hooked IH pressure to face side of cylinder to get higher pressure on rod side of cylinder.

All a semi mounted plow is is an anchor if it is wet. I'll take my trailer plows. Besides after fooling with 3pt hitch equipment they went out with the 40o's and the n series ford. 3pt what a joke.

It works the exact opposite because weight from the plow is transferred to the rear wheels through the hitch . A drawn doesnt transfer very much if any weight at all

I ge with SV.
This one plow has a two point hitch. 20 bottom rollover....

Versions for tractor without a three point hitch, have a dolly with a three point behind. Highly not manuvrable.

The driver in this movie is doing headlands the wrong way, he should not backup but should do a keyhole turn. Much faster and not much longer headlands. Time saved is quickly recovered. I work for a plow company, so have met some of the best drivers...

No, I can see that tree point is mostly useless on wide farm implements with flexible frames, etc... Threshold is more in the 170-200hp Era than the Ford 8N
