Going to try and explain this problem without knowing the names of the part in question. There is a part hanging back above the rear axles--actually it is a two part deal kind of bolted together. Two air lines come back to these parts from the front. These two parts have air lines connected to both parts each other and then two air lines go back to the rear air brakes...There is an air leak in this two part assembly that bleeds off my air down to zero.....sorry for the crazy description---any ideas and or help....len in michigan

That is the brake can sir. They can have the diaphragm changed in side of them. There is a big spring inside though. They can be dangerous to disassemble if you don't know what your doing. I would just pull it off and get a replacement cannister.

Does it leak all the time or only when the parking brakes are released?

If it leaks only while the parking brakes are released it sounds like a bad diaphragm in a parking broke release "chamber" has failed and is leaking air into the service brake side which is then exiting through a "quick release valve".

(A you likely know, there's a BIG deadly spring in the parking brake "chamber", do NOT attempt to disassemble, it can KILL you. Replace the complete assembly IF needed.)

Another possible problem would be a "treadle valve" with a stick mechanism so the brake pedal doesn't come all the way "up" when released or an internal leak in the treadle valve.

You said hanging above the axle, not bolted to it, right? That sounds like the quick release valve to me. Is the valve about five inches square in approxemate size?

Beagle

I ment to say relay valve.

hello wore out--it leaks all the time. Last year it was leaking also then it quit leaking, bu tnot thos year....

YES 504 it is the part above the axle and two lines run from this part down to the brake cans or brake cannisters. The brake cans are NOT LEAKING...A guy just texted me and said the part that is leaking is called a RELAY VALVE......or quick release valve as 504 stated......

Eagle Beagle and 504 have named the leaking part. QUICK RELEASE VALVE or RELAY VALVE....Is there any fix for this or can a new one be bought???? Many thanks for the info. much appreciated....................

Eagle Beagle YES that is one of the parts. This part is bolted to another part that is about the same size and those two parts have an air hose connecting them together and then two lines go down to the brake CANISTERS...DO you see the other part that is on the IHC Paystar 5000????????

Lenray Call me. Lost your number with phone change. It sounds like your chamber is leaking through the brake diaphram. Or you have a rotted out pipe nipple behind your quick release valve to the tank. Those quick release valves don't give much trouble or at least I have not had much trouble with them on trucks and trailers I've owned over the last 30 years. I think I've needed to change 3 on 2 trailers over that time.

Your statement "and then two air lines go back to the rear air brakes" tells us that you know what your brake cans are and that you are not referring to them. Another component that can be back there on a dump truck is a tailgate lock actuating cylinder.

IF when you go to RELEASE the parking brakes yo then start to loose air pressure Fast then one of your SPRING loaded parking brakes has a blowen pancake . Now keep in mind here they are SPRING loaded and before you even try to remove one first you have to used the special bolt to pull the spring back BEFORE you remove that brake chamber or it will KILL YOU and at the vary least injure you . If you are lucky that special bolt will still be on the brake chamber and you remove it from it's mounting point and install it in the end of the brake chamber and get it to lock in the TEE slot and install the nut back on the threads and start turning in in TIGHT all the way BEFORE you even think about removing the clamp ring . One of the major reasons for pancake failure is brakes being way out of adjustment and over stretching the pancake or the spring had broken and went thru it . IF you do not know what your doing then hire someone that does to do this job .
