Pull start a diesel question

Will pull starting a diesel tractor get
air out of the system? I have a little
Iseki that will not start. I did all the
normal troubleshooting and still nothing.
This weekend I installed new injector
nozzles and have good spray from them.
Still nothing, just lots of white smoke.
I have bleed the lines like the book tells
me to, even tried spraying silicon spray
in the intake. Nothing. I know
compression is low, 380 and 340 lbs which
is probably my problem. However it was
running when I turned it off, and now
won't start back up. I figured I would
pull start it before I remove the head.
the engine is a Mitsubishi KE70
Thanks.

Pull starting will most likely get it started because you'll be able to spin the engine faster than the starter can thus raising the compression. Diesel engines rely on the Heat of Compression to ignite the fuel-air mixture.

Yes it will. The bonus is that will splash oil into the bottom of the cylinders as well increasing the compression. I used to work on a lot of dairy tractors and most of them were so worn out they had to be pulled if they sat for a week.

That engine needs glowplug heat to start. I assume you are glowing it. Make sure all of the glow plugs are working too.

Before you try pulling it, you might spray a little WD-40 into the intake. A diesel will run on WD-40.

When I change fuel filters on a diesel, I'll shoot a puff of WD-40 into the intake to get it started, and the a few more puffs until it runs on its own.

Yes I am using glow plugs. I have removed them from tractor to verify they are indeed working. So get the glow plugs good and hot before I start pulling it?

Pull starting will work, but if I were working on it a really good battery would be my first go to.

Cranking speed will help offset the lower compression numbers.

I bought a new battery. It is spinning over pretty good. I was hoping that was my problem but it didn't change anything.

Yup I know you said you only changed the injectors though if you had the pump off or loose it could be off time and even a little goes a long ways on diesels for starting.

Having a new battery has very little to do with it. White smoke means that it is getting fuel. That leaves compression or timing being the problem. Timing is a large issue: leave it on the back burner until you are sure that you have compression, which you have said that you know is marginal. Compression comes from tight piston rings, good vales, and adequate cranking speed. "Spinning over pretty good" is not a verification of adequate speed. You need to either have a verified fully charged battery with booster cables from your truck on it, or tow start it. What does silicone spray do for starting a diesel? That is a new one on me.

It was new to me as well. I friend of mine who works on diesel trucks told me to use silicon spray instead of ether. In the past
I have used WD40 with ether at the same time. At this point I am trying anything. Hopefully pull starting will do the trick. I
understand the timing could be off, however it was running fine until I turned it off.

Pull starting beats a battery every time. Could just be still some air trapped in the system if it ran before. I've had quite a time getting some of mine to start after a filter change. Numerous bleed attempts finally got the old Perkins powered Massey to fire. Same on the 2090 this spring. These engines are in good shape and normally great starters but a little bit of air in the fuel system can be a big problem.

Yrs back I owned a Ford 3000 tractor with a faulty fuel gauge that I utilized to rake hay. My elderly tractor driver would drive by my diesel storage tank without filling tractor fuel. Then late in hay field the 3000 would run out of fuel. I'd put fuel in tank & bleed fuel system until I was MAD & engine wouldn't start running. Hook on & attempt to tow start & engine would running in about 5-10 ft of towing

Do you set the throttle wide open or at idle? Seems that in the long distance past I pull started a 3000 and at wide open it skidded the tires, at idle it started. Does it make a difference?
