fuel oil in a diesel engine

My son has a couple of hundred gallons of home heating fuel left over after his furnace died and he purchased a heat pump technology system. The dealer where he bought his small Kubota last year said he could use it in that. I'm wondering if its OK to use in my IH 234 diesel which is late 70's technology so there is about 40 years difference in engines. I know home heating oil is pretty similar to diesel but I suspect there are different additives. Neither of us go through a lot of diesel fuel but if we both use it maybe we can use it up over the next year or so.

Generic off road diesel and heating oil is the same stuff. Either can be number 1 or 2. Certain suppliers may add additives to off road diesel, but most dont. Generally different taxes, but that is state by state.

It wouldn't hurt to add "biocide" to it, then filter it through a good bulk diesel fuel filter while transferring it.

I second what wore out said, get some biocide, it's not cheap, but neither are new filters, and filter it before putting it in the tractor.
I have had trouble with diesel that sits awhile plugging the screen in my fuel funnel.

I deliver fuel now for a living and yep it is plain old diesel fuel, have an injection system for the premium diesel, but don't do it for home heating!

(quoted from post at 08:53:27 05/10/21) Just don't use it in the winter, heating fuel will jel in the cold.

That would make it pretty useless as a home heating fuel thats normally only used in winter months

UP here the fuel oil tanks are in the basement of the house so the fuel is warm enough that it won't jell up.
