Posted on Craigslist not too far from me, not mine. Dont think Ive ever seen one quite like it. Would like to see the old engine running and winch being used, GP Love ought to go fetch this and get it going...

Its an old forestry winch.

This is the damage one of them winches can do.
This is a modern picture of a area that was clear cut using a similar winch between 1870 and 1900.

Thanks Ithink they were pretty common out in the Northwest part off the country . Saw one just about like it bring over 3 thousand not long ago at auction ;

Wow, Id like to buy that one if I knew I could flip it for 3 grand. I bought a huge pto driven winch last year that I thought I would use and its just sitting in the barn taking up space

Yep, my Grandfather had one. Around here its called a Donkey winch. A cable break under load will clear-cut the underbrush and anyone foolish enough to be standing within range.
