Planting dates

Herre in western Colorao,we plant usually in the first part of May. Some folks say April 15 is the 'magic number' for planting corn. All corn has to be in the ground by the first of June or it wont make. The earlier corn does seem to yield better.I like to plant 100 day. Some of the early planters do go with 110 day, some og the later ones use 90-95 day.Only once in my entire carrer have I planted 'early. One year I was done by April 13. I have planted the last weel of May a couple of times. The danger of frost is too high at about the middle of Sept, but I've seen it wait till mid/end of Oct,too. You guys who talk of planting in July just 'floors' me. Cant even wrap my brain around that.I have oe field planted now, will plant the rest ahead of the water,as we have to irrigate verything up. We are just that dry here.even so,we can get a frost in late May.With our altitude(5000 ft) and the fact we are surrounded by 10'000 ft mountins we can get 30 to (sometimes)40 degree temp swings daily.Amazeing how differing places do things differently

Most farmers carry crop insurance today so the decisions revolve around the planting date assigned by the insurance company for the area in question. April 20 would be very early for those not concerned or involved with crop insurance around here.
