purple trees

Out riding tractor and saw trees with purple on them. Ask farmer about them. He said hunters would just take down no trespassing sign and trespass any way. Purple is a code for no trespassing. I did not know that. Is that code for here in Indiana only or is it used in other states.

Three purpke slashes n a diagonal pattern at least 12 inches long is considered legal here in Tennessee .

I guess it is- never heard of that one. Just another way for folks to claim ignorance when caught. It probably works best if you use it to spray 2 foot-tall letters on a white board that say NO HUNTING or TRESPASSING!

A better way would be like they NOW handle ATV riders: They would always tear down signs that said NO ATVs and then tear up the trails. When caught on restricted use land they would feign suprise because there were no signs saying they were banned. The state changed it so now the signs say ATVs ALLOWED, and if there isnt a sign, they arent allowed on that trail or land. Sure cured the mystery of all those signs going missing!
Hunters (or trespassers) should get the same treatment. If you want them on your property, you should put up signs welcoming them. No signs, no use.
NO HUNTING, maybe?

Painted our trees purple. Seems to be working. No one is poaching our mushrooms this year.

I have always heard of the purple markings. seems to be standard in the West.. I was also told that a tire on a gate post was a no hunting sign.

Perhaps it was a red bud tree. They are purple in the spring for a couple weeks and then that dies off and it's left with green foliage.

Purple tree, fence post, old tire hanging on a post - lots of things, all are known and for the most part respected in south central KS. The effort to use purple to mark places for no hunting has been around at least 20 years.

Red and orange paint are used to mark trees for removal.

I've never seen anything in a hunting rules book about purple or tires replacing no hunting signs. Which states are those actually legal, or is that just a rural legend?

Which states are those actually legal

A partial list of states that have paint laws. I know Louisiana was recently added to the list.

Most states use purple because color blind people can see the paint.
Say a person is color blind to red. The purple may look blue to them but they can still see the paint. Where as if you used red paint they could not see it.

Kansas changed their laws years back. Purple paint is for no hunting only and has no legal significance for no trespassing. Still need the no trespassing signs if worried about that. The purple stripe has to be at least 8" long and vertical and positioned between 3' and 5' above ground level. Paint it on trees, fence posts, etc. Put a post at any place hunters may enter.

No hunting signs are not legally valid here if you want to prosecute the violators. Kansas requires by statute "Hunting with written permission only" signs. I think the law was passed that way so as to not make Kansas hostile to hunters. Those signs are hard to find but I finally did. They usually have a line for phone numbers but I just write in "landowner" on the line after the call. The statute has no requirement for putting a phone number on the sign.

Kansas law does allow hunters to go onto adjacent land to retrieve wounded deer/coyotes etc. no matter what kind of keep out, no hunting, and no trespassing signs may be on a place.

Kansas also has a law that if you stock your pond with fish then you have to allow others in to fish. I doubt that most people in the general public would know unless someone told them so not usually a problem that comes up.

FYI, Giggle your state statutes for hunting.

(quoted from post at 10:30:53 05/02/21) So if they take down the signs and trespass how would the purple paint make a difference. Just saving the cost of the signs.

I guess the trespassers would have to carry a can of other color paint to enter???

In Cameron Parish where my camp is the entire parish has been entirely posted... All land.... Since the earliest of the set up of parish laws. You can put up signs if you want but the Sheriff Dept will surely arrest you if property calls it in without the signs..... And they surely will. It's a tough parish to be arrested by the law.

South Dakotas no trespassing law is simple. You must have the land owners or operators permission. Signs are not required.

That'd be great, big ol' gunfight at the aFordable farm ..... two gone to the great unknown, one trespasser and one land owner. Both left the world happy doing illegal things with guns or quads or whatever. We need more gunfights to keep things in order.

I don't feel as bad now. I was wishing there was a way to delete my post about two seconds after I did it. Didn't realize the OP was talking about purple paint.

Try tearing the purple paint off of a tree or a fence post.

They tear down the signs so they can feign ignorance, "I didn't see any sign! Gosh golly gee mister, someone must have torn it down!"

A friend of mine was buying no trespassing signs I asked what she was going to do with them ?put em up to keep trespassers out . I said a 410 loaded with rock salt would be a better investment and it will actually work
