JD2240 Rockshaft Issues

Hey Guys,
I have a early model 2240 that has seen some abuse. When I bought it several years ago it was missing the cover for the transmission case fill. The hydraulics wouldnt work very well and it would plug the filter in a few minutes of run time. Turns out the transmission case had a layer of dirt in it. I flushed it out with diesel and replaced the hydraulic pump. I also had to replace the rockshaft piston seal. After all that it has worked pretty well the last few years.
Recently I noticed leakage past the rockshaft piston seal and decided to tear it apart. Unfortunately I found the cylinder walls were badly scored and there was a lot of metal flakes stuck in the piston seal. It looks like the metal was coming from the front of the cylinder, I think it may have been caused by the piston traveling too far forward and hitting the front of the cylinder. Is this likely? Is there an adjustment that need to be made? Im going to try to purchase a new cylinder assembly and dont want to repeat the performance.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Joe.

How much is this tractor worth to you? That cylinder new is a little over $1500!! See link, there is a serial number split, I chose the early serial number parts diagrams. Maybe you meant you are getting a used part that is still good, at least that is what I would recommend. I cannot help you with the other questions. If you do not get any other replies here I would post this over in the John Deere section.

Fortunately I only gave about $1500 for the tractor plus a new pump so I can spend some on it without too much regret. I did see Wengers has a used part for $300 Im going to try.
Thanks for the input!

Have you checked/cleaned hyd oil suction screen(key 30) & checked to be sure hyd filter relief valve(kys 18-20) isn't stuck open

My next suggestion is adjust rockshaft control linkage as outlined in a JD 2240 tech manual. That adjustment procedure should make rockshaft piston travel in R housing correct.

Thanks for the reply Jim,
I havent checked the screen or relief valve yet but I am going to. I will change the oil and check them out. I had the manual out yesterday looking at the different adjustments. I just wasnt sure which one I need to focus on.
