CIH 5140 gear shift linkage

On the Maxxum 5140 tractor, I have had one
of the gearshift linkage rods seize on the
ball where the socket end slips over and
wring the ball into off of the stud that
fits into the control arm. Is this part
threaded into the arm or is it a press
fit. No luck getting it to wiggle with
vise grips.

I cannot directly answer your question but I can direct you to some parts diagrams that should show it as a separate part and maybe describe the threads. The CNHI online parts catalog must be down this weekend for an update. I will place a link to avspare they show the diagrams for your tractor. You can click the image for the diagram to show up clearer as a picture. Beware of the pop up adds and I have never tried to order parts from them just got the IH numbers there. I would give a link to Messicks but they always seem to get proofed being a direct competitor. Hope this helps.

Thank you used red. I tried looking it up online late yesterday with no luck to determine the next move. My regular Case dealer that had been in business forever lost his ties with Case so it's gotten hard to get info or correct parts on some of this stuff. Next closest place an hour away is good on new stuff but not old unless you have an accurate part number. I've changed several of these joints before but never had one break the ball like this one did.

No problem, I appreciate the reply. I spend more time than I should on here just trying to help folks out. Quite often myself and others put up info here and dont hear a peep one back. I guess on the occasions I do here back it must give me enough ..feel good.. that I keep doing it. BTW, I asked on the AgTalk forum about the CNHI parts site being down and just figured out they must have made a slight change to how you access it. I will attach a link to that, you will see the avspare pages are almost exact copies. I dont know if you have ever heard of the AgTalk forums but if you are actually on a working farm there is way more current machine and farm practice info there then here and way more traffic. I wouldnt doubt that someone over there has experienced the same issue you went through on that tractor. I generally post here from Classic so that only allows one link per post I will add another reply with a link to AgTalk.

I got that breakdown listing to come up. Looks like it is only available made as one piece with the balls already made on. Grrrrrr. Gonna be a simple job turned into an ordeal. Thanks used red for the links.
