I'm trying to get a 584 to charge. It has the Lucas alternator. I have 12 volts on the wire from switch to alternator (switch on and tractor not running). However with the tractor running no volt reading from switch when attached to alternator and alternator will not charge. With tractor running I can unplug wire from switch from the alternator and get 12 volts from switch. I jumped from hot terminal on starter to terminal on alternator where switch wire goes on alternator and presto alternator charges? Where is the problem?

We do not know which Lucas alt. you have. there are multiple wiring possibilities. The wire from the switch may be bad. Or its connection at the switch. If powered at first, then goes dead, I suspect the wire. Here is one example of a diagram and info from an international Lucas installation. Jim

those Models 74,84,85 and such have a few wire junction blocks and plug connectors that get dirty and not make connection through them. I just had to do all that with a 674 that the key switch would not activate the stater solenoid to start. Pulled the plugs apart cleaned and now works fine. I would start there first then fix what needs fixed. Might be just the connections.
