Ok guys I installed new sleeves and o rings in a bd154 on our b414 tonight. When I was finished I was looking up from underneath and found that I shaved a small sliver off of one of the o rings. Has anyone had this happen to them? I hate to pull the sleeve and wait on a new o ring but I dont want to have a leak either. The pictures are the same piece just wanted to show how thin it was. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

That's just part of it. I rebuild a lot of engines. I busted a dry sleeve the other day installing it in a Perkins.Ordered another one and it went right in. Engine is now running fine.

The area where the o-ring goes needs to be clean and then clean it 3 more times. If you can cut your fingers on any thing it need more TLC Plus you need a good lube to set them in place. I use Dawn dish shop

The only test that would pass my judgement would be to pressurize it to 20 psi with a small amount of water or coolant above it. That is impractical given the ease of doing what old indicates. The delay is cheap compared to wasting the time and investment in gaskets to assume it will not leak. it could leak immediately, or a year from now. Sometimes they leak when new and not nipped. Jim

In my 42 years of working on these engines I would pull the sleeve and fit a new o-ring after I had thoroughly cleaned the groove and fitted the new o-ring with some Vaslene cream. MJ.

Thanks for all the advice. I really appreciate it. I made a trip to the IH dealer and picked up a new O ring today. Ill be pulling the sleeve and hopefully installing the new one damage free tomorrow evening.
